I have a large bowie pattern knife (bladee made by Solingen back in the 70's or so) that once was an athame.
Once.
Now it is merely a knife and a particularly useful one.
If it would behave itself.
It is surgical steel, takes a nicec edge, but has this nasty habit of taking a bite out of you once in awhile, all without you feeling it.
And the looking around while wondering where the blood was coming from was my personal experience with said knife.
It nailed me in the side of the index finger at the base of the cuticle between the index and middle fingers.
(I still don't know how.)
But there it was, blood everywhere and me wondering whose it was.
Until I put my hand on my chin and felt wet on my face.

I've never cut myself really badly, but I do tend to not notice when I'm bleeding until I actually see it (like when I'm chopping vegetables, or touch a sharp piece of metal, etc.) I thought it was really ironic last night that after I got up from the computer, I went to wash my face before I went to bed - and I noticed that my earlobe was bleeding. And I have NO IDEA how it happened.
