Actually it's a standard practice to show that this person had control of the room. A utility bill would have the same effect or they could have just subpoenaed the housing records.
But this is scary ... the temptation to 'plant' something must be mounting.

It is scary. If one of my sons was in danger of being drawn into the web of the DA and his protege, his dorm room would be stripped clean. I would have documented evidence that nothing was left. Just in case a strippers white shoe suddenly showed up there......
