The victim, a single mom who turned to exotic dancing to support her two kids, attends North Carolina Central University, a mostly black college in Durham.
She plans to keep a low profile until the students go on trial to avoid inflaming tensions in the black community, where opinion is running heavily against the privileged students.
One of the most hurtful things for the woman about the media circus surrounding the case, the cousin said, is the tendency to assume the worst about her because she is a stripper.
"She's a victim and she's a human being," the cousin said. "Her occupation couldn't justify that a crime like this was committed."

Thank you; I know I was away for a while but it would be all over the news if the stripper's shoe was found in one of the rooms.
I have had arguments with white people before and I have never ever been called a racial slur nor have I used one.
I think LB's looking for a new charge of "criminal stupidity." Which keeping the stripper's shoe for 4 weeks would be, except how would he get rid of it? Remember Gary Condit and the watch? There's no way to get rid of it without making yourself look guilty.
There is a faddishness of words in the Queer Eye for the Queer Guy media. The one that was big a few years ago was "mean-spirited."
What lesson is that? Not to hire strippers? It's practically a rite of passage in college among young men. Unless you're a Holier Than Thou, that is.
And I'll bet most of the fathers are saying "There but the grace of God go I."
Who kept a shoe for 4 weeks? It sounds like an uninformed poster to me, just making stuff up.
Isn't it strange that the dorm search came after the indictment? If you have no DNA match and only the belated ID by someone described by several people as intoxicated at the time, why didn't they search the suspects dorm rooms prior to charging them?
I seriously doubt any of those kids kept one of her shoes, but I hope the police waste their time looking instead of trying to find out who bruised this woman before the party. /s
The search warrant listed the shoe.
Are you saying there are no decent, God-fearing young men in college these days who would not do this? I know quite a few young college men who wouldn't. And I know young women who are working their way through college (my daughter included) who haven't become strippers. I really don't have much sympathy for any of those involved in this mess. I have much more sympathy for the coach who lost his job because his players were idiots.
"I also heard (I believe on O'Reilly) that Nifong previously pushed traffic citations"
This Susan Filan said the boys put their coats on before they raped her? Was she trying to be funny? Surely she did not say it with a straight face.
I'm afraid she did....sad isn't it..
I think there are very few young men who at some point don't go to a party where there is a stripper and drinking. Darned few. It used to be considered pretty acceptable for men who are a lot older and presumably mature to have strippers at their bachelor's parties the night before they got married, for crying out loud.
We're becoming a country of metrosexual men and it's really disturbing.
So, are the police looking for her shoe?....I'm confused..
I heard Filan; in fact I was transcribing her statements as she said them. And she was dead serious that maybe the guys put their jackets on before they raped the stripper.
How about being falsely accused of rape??
Are you saying that rapes only occur around strippers??
Your holier-than-thou son could be accused anytime, anyplace. Think about it.
