That having been said, it seems to me part of motorcycle safety is knowing the environment in which you ride and being aware of the possibility of animals darting out at you.Very true.............. that is what our excellent (and NUTS) swimming coach said to us back in 1963.................... stay off the DAMN motorcycles.................. or I'LL chop off your legs for you! (he was an old marine from WWII)

Well, Honda has an airbag equipped version of the 2006 Gold Wing coming out this summer, so someone must have figured out something.
Admittedly it is designed to deploy in head-on crashes only. Sensors are in the front forks, deploy only on front and not side impact.
Of motorcycle accidents involving another vehicle, head-ons into the side of a vehicle that's turning left and across the path of a motorcycle are the most common.

Hi TXBSAFH- Why does your tagline say "What Does Not Kill You Makes You Stronger!" if you don't really believe the words?

The husband of an acquaintance worked on airbags. After the airbags came out, the motorcycle industry hired him to see if they could make the bikes safer. Conclusion: NO.
Honda is about to sell their top of the line Gold Wing (pronounced Winnebago :0) )with air bags this summer.

Not much of an expert, was he?I know your post was said in jest, but you should have shown a bit more discretion before posting that.
To: pikachu
Hi pikachu- The technology is definitely around to incorporate airbags into contemporary motorcycle designs, it's just that most riders don't want to deal with the additional weight of the system or pay for the complexity. I saw remarkable video how airbags would reduce injuries in moderate-speed accidents.
They might find a market with touring bikes and full-sized cruisers...but it would be a difficult sell in the sportbike or standard market where performance holds the most influence.
