WASHINGTON Bausch & Lomb voluntarily suspended shipment of a contact lens solution after federal health officials linked it Monday to a fungal eye infection that can cause temporary blindness.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating 109 reports of Fusarium keratitis infection in patients in 17 states since June 2005.
Federal and state health officials have interviewed just 30 of those patients. However, of the 28 who wore soft contact lens, however, 26 reported using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu brand contact lens solution or a generic type of solution also made by the Rochester, N.Y., company.
Bausch & Lomb said it would temporarily suspend shipments of ReNu with MoistureLoc made at its Greenville, S.C., plant.
"The CDC data released today are both troubling and perplexing, as there is an apparent disproportionate representation of U.S.-manufactured ReNu with MoistureLoc in the underlying data. The source of these infections has not been determined," company chairman and chief executive officer Ronald Zarrella said.

Ew.
Bausch & Lomb didn't see that coming.
I use that stuff. I also had a severe eye infection last fall. Scared the heck out of me.
Eek. I'm using it right now. I almost done with the bottle though, and I don't think it's any better than the old stuff.

Bookmarking to check the label on my wife's solution at home.
We've both had to switch from a terrific product called Ciba Vision Clean and Clear that had production lab issues. The product won't be back out till July of this year.
I had an eye problem last time I used Renu about 2 yrs ago. Not sure if it had the ingredient listed in this article.
I have great results with it; my current contacts are going strong after more than six years.
But they seem to have stopped making it; I was just about to switch, maybe to ReNu, when my supply runs out.
Anybody know where one can get more AOSept?
The generic brand (s) they make are also said to be suspect.
Oh great, what generic brands do they make?
I don't know. I guess a supermarket could tell if you asked who makes their store brand.
..My eyes are fine...(I hope!)
Jolly, it's exactly what I use. Well, back to simple saline for the washing, and hydrogen peroxide for disinfection. (IE AOSept).
She'll fog 'em up, all right!
Oh, now you've gone and done it; I'll never be able to switch to ReNu now...
I just bought two bottles of cleaner and two bottles of some other kind of solution made by that company for my hubby....I am talking just 2 hours ago!
