I have never posted a vanity thread before or something so "off topic." But I am desperate and need help. My husband is going crazy trying to figure this out, and I am following him! :-)
My husband has a 45 minute video that he made. He wants to put this DVD on his computer(an ibook G4),edit it, and then put it into mpeg4 to upload on our churches website. The only editing he wants to do is put an intro and an exit. It is a church service video.
I don't know anything about this sort of thing, but any answers I will print for my hubby. Some questions.
**Does he need another program besides what came with the computer (imovie,iDVD,Quicktime)?
**Is there something he can download to make it easier?
**How much time should he expect it to take?
If you can PLEASE help us, we would GREATLy appreciate any advice.
Authoring DVD video requires software that creates a UDF file system and a VIDEO_TS folder with VOB and IFO files. It's not enough to burn an mpeg file.
He should be able to do just fine with iMovie (editing the film) and iDVD (putting it on the DVD, "burning it").
I've done this on a Windows platform, not Mac, but I've also read that iMovie is simple and effective. Perhaps we can ping you some help. Or maybe you could google "iMovie" for tutorials.
I'm not an expert, but a 45 minute DVD seems awfully long to put up on a website.

Watch this video tutorial. If it doesn't answer all, do another search on apple's site.
iMovie + iDVD should be all you need.
Can't really tell ya how long it should take, but it shouldn't be that bad. :)
Oh, I see what she wants: take the video OFF of the camcorder medium, convert it to MP4 and post it online.
I don't know how to do that on the Mac.
Housewife: the following link is an excellent resource for video / DVD / editing questions:

With regard to software, I think you have all you need - I've never used it, but I think iMovie should allow you to edit the movie fairly easily.
As for the mpeg-4 conversion, things may get tricky (refer to the above linked website for help with conversion).
Hope this helps.
Ripping DVDs, I use Mac The Ripper. Go to www.versiontracker.com, and download the latest version there.
Editting video, iMovie ought to fit the bil.
Uploading to the website, some type of file transfer capability, such as FTP on the host side will work.
I've not done much video editing, but iMovie, included with the built in software, should provide what you need. It is essentially a video editing studio. You can daisy chain movie clips together, including transitions, titles, etc; then burn the whole caboodle to disk.
Well, he was told that Popcorn would break the video down into parts. Then all he would have to do is import the parts into imovie to edit. THen he could us a quicktime download to rip it to impeg. But this didn't work. What kind of program is the best for ripping apart a DVD?
Well, the "computer expert" he talked to who works with computers all the time told him he could do it. THat's all I know about it.:-)Something about compressing with Mpeg files?!
I didn't read the original post completely. I see now that making a DVD is not the goal. My post then is useless.
I cannot help with Apple extraction issues. Sorry.
All right I'll watch it.I know my husband googled this last night but nothing of much help came up. I'll watch to see if this is what he wants to do. Thanks.
iMovie will break the video into parts too. When you import from the camcorder, break it up into segments.
In the Apple commercials you can do this in a couple of minutes without reading any instructions.
I suspect, based on one personal example, that the conversion to mpeg will take many hours. Depends on the speed of the CPU and the resolution you end up with.
Yes, we have an existing DVD that was made at the church. We want to add an intro and an exit and the upload to website. Thanks for your input.I really appreciate it. We hadn't thought of using something on the host sight, but I do think they have that on the cpanel. Thanks!

THis format is on DVD, but my husband is considering running our camera directly into the computer next time. We'll see. As of last night he wanted to march the computer back to the store! :-)
I have also found Quicktime Pro helpful for messing around with video on a Mac, but that costs $29.99 and I don't think it reads DVD directly.
