McPhee is extremely self-conscious in a negative way. I still get the strong impression that she behaves the way she thinks people (i.e., her vocal coach mom) expect her to behave rather than just relaxing and being herself. As a result, her body language and movements are extremely awkward.

Exactly. In the rehearsal footage, she was loose, bouncy and having a good time. But last night, she was buttoned up and deadly serious--as she seems to be every week. And she screamed through half that song, trying to be dramatic. Didn't do anything for me.

For Katharine, even loose, bouncy and having a good time looks awkward and self-conscious. I mean that in the 2nd dictionary sense: Uncomfortably conscious of oneself as an object of the observation of others : ILL AT EASE

Katharine always looks ill at ease to me.
