Here in the San Francisco bay area one sometimes reads about pit bulls kept by gang members. These young men keep their un-neutered pit bulls on a very tight leash, literally. These young men seem strong enough to control said dog. I used to see them at Fort Funston (off-leash hilly, sandy, beach area, one of God's more beautiful parks) every once in a while. There was usually two or three mean lookin' men and one VERY mean lookin' pit bull. Very tight leash. Beautiful, well-kept dogs.

They use the dogs for protection. They let them roam their environs or territory and woe betide any innocent child who gets in the way.

Also, some use them as entertainment, to fight OTHER pit bulls...and they gamble on the outcome. Cockfighting, only with pit bulls against each other. I never saw any of those dogs...they would have had some scars. The ones I saw were VERY well-kept dogs.

Errrr....yes. That is why they are called "Pit Bulls", they were breed to fight in the pit.
