NEW YORK, March 13 (UPI) -- Religious parody on "South Park" has led Isaac "Chef" Hayes to quit the Comedy Central cartoon.
Hayes, who has been with "South Park" since 1997, issued a statement Monday saying he has requested a release from the show because of recent episodes displaying "inappropriate ridicule of religious communities."
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry toward religious beliefs of others begins," Hayes said.
"Religious beliefs are sacred to people and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."
Hayes did not specify any episodes in particular, but a recent show called "Bloody Mary," which included the defiling a statue of the Virgin Mary drew fire from Roman Catholic groups.
As I wrote, those who immediately dump on its rude humor are the ones who don't realize their mentality is what's most often being satirized. The show's take on the Katrina hysteria, for example, is the ONLY non-conservative slamming of the insane bias exhibited in the reporting of that story.
Why didn't he quit in Season 5, then?
And "Team America" when they blew up Baldwin puppets to hamburger bits--
I love Chef, but there are about five million starving soul singers who could play that part, musically and otherwise, justa s well.
"Oh, h*ll no!"
Farting at a hurricane still isn't satire. And what's the "non-conservative"? I thought SP fans always raved about how conservative Matt and Trey are.
EveningStar was banned for saying, "horsepucky?"
Crap ... I've been saying "poopyhead" all over this thread!
"I am pinch-pinging this South Park story, hopefully only temporarily until he returns! "
Is Pinch Pinging vastly different from being a Designated Pinger?
I think Designated Pingers make more money.
We had a fun banning last night when some guy took too long to realise that "holdonnow" was actually Mark Levin, and kept asking why "holdonnow" was accusing him of lying about him when he was talking about some Talk Show Host, not any freepers.....
So he was aborted, eh?
If I were one of the South Park guys, I'd keep Chef around and wildly miscast his voice in every subsequent episode. (For example, have John Cleese do the voice one week, Gilbert Goddfried the next, Kathleen Turner after that...) Just treat it as a running joke, rather than giving Those Who Shall Not Be Named a victory.
That's actually a pretty funny idea. :~D
Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.
"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."
"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem -- and he's cashed plenty of checks -- with our show making fun of Christians."
I'm going to miss chef :(
LOL... that's an interesting idea... ;-D
As far as EveningStar can tell he was banned for posting an article from the blog of a previously banned poster. He has done this for over a year and such articles have been posted by others but he was booted out the door. He can still read freepmail but can not respond. I can also send messages to him.
That is a funny idea.. you should write Matt and Trey and suggest that to them.
