The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.
"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.
In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.
The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

If I were you, I'd skip it. I thought it was a very simple minded movie masquerading as something a lot deeper. I actually found that it was rather insulting. I don't understand why there are so many fans of it here. Every racial stereotype is represented in this movie and the entire premise of the movie is based on the idea that being a racist is foremost on everyone's mind when they do anything.
Then again, it's only 2 hours of your life. I survived it. You can too. :)
Okay, so it was a 'moderate' wet dream where everyone's a racist. Either way, it's pretty simple minded.
No YOU are wrong...
hehe...we can go on like this all day... :-P
The Best make-up Oscar surprised me, especially since I thought Narnia was an animated cartoon. My mistake. How did they get those big groundhogs to speak so well?
Listen, you take your ignorant insults to someone who gives a sh*t. You let your mouth overload your brain, post after endless post and quite frankly, it is tiresome.
Brokeback won best screen adaptation, best musical score and some other off the radar nomination. Hardly 'key hollyweird honors'.

I saw 'Crash' and thought it was a pretty good movie. It wasn't the same old crap. It shows a number of people thru a timespan and how their interactions with others can have a rippling effect on how everyone treats those they come into contact with.
It sounds like it was probably a good documentary. My sister made the mistake of thinking it was a movie and that kids would like it! Her kids wound up shocked and crying. Not a good film for young kids.
Crash was very good. I'm sorry if it touched off a nerve, but no one or no race was spared in that movie.
Good one!
Boring and it takes place in L.A.
And in the end, who got the shaft?????????
What specifically did you not like in the movie?
No one came off good in that movie other than the Hisapnic dad trying to make a living.
It's pathetic that the gay gimmic movie won three Oscars.
Amazing. The ONLY movie of all of them that I saw, and it was very good. I'm stunned.
Sandra Bullock came across as a real pice of S%^& in that movie. I told my girlfriend woman like that are why men cheat and/or leave. She could not understand why I said that.
I thought the movie was great. It exposed many many layers of racism. No race was left un-exposed.
Plus, it did not pander or try to feed you some message. It just left you thinking about a lot of stuff.
Your reply was not funny EVEN with the tag.
Good one!
One of the amazing feats is how their instincts lead them all to the same location after a 70 mile walk inland {to avoid the ice melting as the temperature warms later} to pair up and raise their young in brutal conditions.
