The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.
"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.
In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.
The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

Then you are simply ignorant.
That doesn't bother you.
That says everything you need to know about metal-brained Oskars.
Whatever?
I thought us Conservatives were motivated by facts and not emotion. Are my facts wrong? They aren't, but if you want to somehow show me that they are, go ahead.
If you want to argue it is a commercial flop, please explain to me what criteria you would use to get to this conclusion. It seems quite difficult seeming as how it's made more then 5 times it's budget in just domestic box office recipts, not counting foreign take or DVD sales/rentals.
I don't think so at all, because in a "liberal wet dream" the only racist is the white man.
Couldn't agree more.
You should be proud of your discerning son.
Looks like Hollywood commited suicide again tonight. Most of the films tonight that were nominated for anything were completely obscure and unknown "art-house" pieces. Yikes, whatever happened to the blockbuster that actually wins awards, too?
JFK was a decent movie.
You had to understand that it wasn't the ONLY possible theory involving the assassination.
I know a lot of people saw it without knowing the facts. But of those who did, they understood it to be a decent movie, not a great one.
Crash was a sleeper hit and BBM is closing in on 90 million.
You're wrong about that.
I'll bet the ACLU and GLAAD will be suing the pants off "the Academy" tomorrow over Brokedick not cleaning up. Obviously a case of "homophobia."
Right on.
Crash was actually one of the most daring films I've seen. It took on racism in all it's forms, INCLUDING the sort of liberal 'you need your big daddy to take care of you' racism, black on white racism, minority on minority racism etc.
What's more, it did so, for the most part, in a very realistic, very honest way. It didn't draw any easy answers or damn anybody. There was no government program to fix it. It wasn't the fault of some corporation. It was problems with individuals. Black individuals, white individuals, hispanic individuals, etc. A human problem that will always exist, and can best be confronted by those who create it, i.e. yourself, and your friends and family.
Good to hear that.
"On New Years Eve, I saw Memoirs of a Geisha."
I'm dying to see this movie. Missed it on the opening. It should show up in the secondary theaters (the cheap seats ones) shortly. Soon as it does, I'm going. Also plan on buying it when it comes out on DVD. Hope the DVD comes out soon. I read the book which was excellent.
Why would it?
Oh for crying out loud...I cannot believe such silliness is being posted on FR. What is this tonight? DUer's night out on Free Republic?
Brilliant synopsis!
Whatever. Freeman is a Clinton lapdog, hates Bush - that makes him Hollywood garbage in my book.
