Might could rig up a door of some kind...or a board I can slide out to shovel stuff from there.

Can you hear the squirrels carryin' on from over there? The monsters are runnin' all over the place and they don't like it one bit.

Luckily for the wildlife, the kittens are morons... they see something and just dart across the yard after it. The birds and squirrels are not yet at risk.

Heh...I hadn't heard them. Silly kittens...

I found an odd sort of candle holder thingie out there - a little chair. I put the pop can in the picture for size comparison. It's kinda cute, in an odd sort of way. Filthy, of course, but I think I'll clean it up and find a pretty candle for it one of these days.

There are little hooks on the back of the circle part...maybe used to have a little stained glass bit or something that went there?

Hehehe. One of these days they'll start mauling the local wildlife, though...

I know... I've got to rebuild the squirrel platform so the monsters can't get up there.

Is it really so much to ask? Implausible as that whole part was...couldn't they have *used* it?

I think later I'm gonna try to round up all the stuff I still have over here from when I was moving in...your shop vac and tools and all. I keep forgetting to bring those back.

For right now, I'm trying to decide if I'm motivated enough to get in the car and drive somewhere in search of a tarp.

I've got mostly "brown stuff" - leaves - but you can put any vegetable matter. I also put egg shells, cat fur, hair, coffee grounds, tea bags, dryer lint. If I raked grass clippings, I'd put that in there. (Got a mulching mower....don't have no steenkin' grass clippings.) Small sticks are okay - they help aerate the pile, but they decompose slower. If you're running short of green stuff, you can add fertilizer. Oh yeah, sugary drinks are good so you can put flat soda in there.

Don't put in meat or fat (attracts rats). No kitty waste (parasites.)

I guess you'll have access to some horse manure, but I don't know if you composte it with the vegetable matter or not. I've heard that you can compost things like chicken litter and rabbit raisins.

If I remember correcty, it should be at least 3ft by 3ft. Keep it moist. Aerating or turning the pile makes it work faster.

I've had a compost pile steam on me, but never had one catch fire.

If you have to screen sides, can you make one side with a removable screen so it'll be easier to get the stuff out?

The monsters have discovered the squirrel feeder outside... The squirrels are NOT amused.

Pictures!

Maybe a mirror to reflect the candlelight?

Compost happens faster if you do smaller batches. And it happens faster in warm weather.

1) Yes, screen the sides. 2) put in lawn trimmings, leaves, grass, whatever, veggie scraps, coffee grounds, coffee filters, egg shells, scrap paper like newsprint (but nothing glossy like magazines), animal fur, dryer lint, etc. 3) avoid putting in fats, dairy, and proteins like meat. 4) some people swear by doing everything in layers, but given that you mix it up periodically, I don't see what difference it makes. 5) You can add in worms or bacterial 'boosters' to speed things up if you want to spend the $.

It also has a little space underneath...I take it that's a good thing, for aerating it? I'd put straw or screen on the bottom to keep that space.

Yeah...probably a mirror.

Gosh knows there were enough mirror bits out there. I figure those folks are unlucky for life at this point. ;-)

I bet those folks were unlucky for life before they started breaking mirrors. Good luck doesn't generally happen to the sorts of people who leave thousands of pounds of trash about.

Heh...there's gotta be a joke in this somewhere, but I'm not sure how it should be worded.

Got the tarp laid out. Now I just gotta wait. *paces impatiently*

I was bad...also got some other seeds. They were marked down. I already had a lotta good stuff from the goody box you guys gave me so I didn't go nuts, but I did pick up some lettuce, lemon cukes, and a another color of alyssum.
