The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I was out at the barn Monday night and riding Waylon in the outdoor arena when some bozo ( a boarder's husband)started shooting off a paint gun right next to the arena into the woods. Waylon really spooked and snorted. The guy asked me if that bothered the horse---duh? I told him yes and he said "oh sorry, and continued to empty the gun. What a jerk.

The rest of the night,Waylon would go nowhere near the woods and it has taken me two rides to get him near it. I am really mad, I can't imagine how anyone could be so stupid !!!\\

Going to the cabin this weekend and can't wait..it's supposed to be a nice weekend.

Oh, that is too bad. Some people just don't understand that there are somethings that just don't belong around a stable. I guess it's a good thing that maybe your horse will be despooked from gun shot, but it shouldn't happen at an arena area, unless the rider specifically is training for that.

Jeepers... people firing guns, playing football... Boarding stables are a dangerous place these days with all these bad mannered folk.

The good news is while you say he spooked and snorted, I'm gathering he stayed under you!

Hope you have a nice weekend!

Well, you were being exceptionally polite! At that point I probably would've said "Listen @$$hole, go do that somewhere else!" ;o)

At least you don't have to deal with jerks like that out at the cabin. Have a good ride out there!

Thought you all would find this interesting. Yesterday over on the other side:) some poster responded to Kirk by making some remark about " that once again there were accusations without being specifics.". Kind of aggravated me, so I jumped in again:), and sent a post that said something like I gave specifics, but I'd try again in the hopes that I could get some specific answers. I proceeded to tell the incidents that I had first hand personal knowledge of, the man hitting his horse with his fist, the judges saying that one horse was dangerous and going to kill someone, and the observation I was told to wait at.

The post never showed up, and I sent it twice, 4 hours apart.

I recieved a message today from the director of Region 4, with my messages attached, to not talk about these incidents anymore, as the board was conducting and investigation, and the board didn't want it discussed on a public forum (funny it's now become a "public" forum:).

Well, Well, Well! Isn't that interesting. But maybe something good will come of it. I just think it's kinda funny how defensive people get when you start airing their dirty laundry.

Can you ask them how you'll find out about the outcome of the investigation?

My thoughts exactly. One part of me is thinking, well, these situations should create bomb proof horses, but, these are things riders/horses shouldn't have to deal with at a stable, unless they specifically want too.

I was at the Bixby arena one time with Rusty. The town baseball fields bump up to one side of it. There were a couple of guys over there batting. Several times balls came over into the arena. There were about 10 fields they could have chosen, but of course I was limited to the one arena, and they were on the one where the balls came into the arena. These were men batting, when the little leaguers played it wasn't a problem. Anyway, I politely asked them how long they were going to be there. I was deciding if I should stay or leave. They rudely answered , we don't know, we were here first. Well they were, so I stayed just watched for incomeing. A few days later I went back and was there first:). When they showed up, I was already riding, They stayed on the same field but no balls came into the arena. People are just rude now a days. Becky

I've been trying to decide how/if I want to send a reply back to her. Since I didn't file the complaint, I don't know if it would be right for me ask...i'll find out anyway from Kirk, surely they would let him know since he filed it.

In my post tho, I gave specifics and then asked questions about those incidents, at the end of it I asked that now that once again I gave specifics, could I get specific answers back, Like was it abuse the man hitting his horse, should the judge have asked me to wait, and was that preferential treatment for one rider, and should that horse have been allowed to continue.

I'm thinking of replying back that, i would be happy to refrain from speaking of it publicly but could she go thru and answer my questions.

I have a feeling tho, I'd get the Texas Two-step from her, about she'd have had to be there....hard to say. I know the lady, and she is a no nonsense type, but that may lean her towards it was not abuse...

People with bad manners everywhere I guess :~\

And yeah - I suppose you could turn it into a training exercise, but not when it's being led by people who are rude and aren't a bit interested in helping you.

One of the trailheads, the one we left out of last time, is right next to the gun club. So there's lots of gunfire. Horses never seem bothered by it, it's just far enough away, and just frequent enough, that they get used to it. It's good training for the 4th of July :~D

I just realized we've got the 4th coming up. I checked and we have some doggie drugs, but I don't know if we have enough :~\

Maybe say that you'd like to talk to them as part of their investigation into it, and that you'd like to re-ask those questions (if they haven't been answered by the decision) at a later date when they're done.

Ok, this would be sent privately, if I send it:), so you all wouldn't see it. What ya think?

Not a problem. (in regards to not talking about it on the forum)

But please note, I did NOT mention any names. If the guilty parties figured out they were being discussed, they were free to come on and defend themselves, as you say, it is a public forum.

I love this sport, and have been working for 4 years to get back in it. I have been shocked, disappointed and amazed at the things that I saw at the ride, and on this forum. I didn't know what to do about them. I just can't believe that NATRC would approve/defend these things.

When I first brought it up on here last week, I was just trying to get info on NATRC rules. I don't know if you saw the responses but they were not informative at all, mostly just people wanting to know who I was. What difference would that make???

I would greatly appreciate your answers to the questions in this post and the one below that was not posted. And I would like to know, if the board will keep us informed of the outcome of the investigation??? I'd like to know so that in the future I'll know if it's even worth making waves about:). IMO, I don't believe any of my posts were accusatory, and comments about this stuff SHOULD be made publicly. These types of behaviors and judgement calls need to be addressed. Sometimes being discreet appears to be political, and that's not good for the sport as a whole and encourages these types of things to continue.

She had mentioned that making comments and accusations on a public forum served no purpose and caused the incidents to be blown out of proportion.

That IS a really good reply. It's not inflamatory and it's really well worded, so they can't just write you off as some kook with an axe to grind. Hopefully you'll get some answers, and I think you diserve them because you were a first-hand observer. Good Luck!

BTW, I've sortof relaxed about the amount of grazing the horses can take... Been letting them stay out there on it, and for a few days there, didn't even give them hay and they didn't ask for it. Gave them some hay last night, just to encourage them to stay up by the house at night.

I don't think they're getting too much.

In the already-grazed half, I've only got a little bit left to mow, if it'd dry out today.
