This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
The cases I am aware of no banamine was give. The horses were walked till the colic passed. The cases where it happened after the second days ride, those horses were medicated and oiled.

Hi Duchess and everybody. If I figured out how to use a digital camera I would have pics but it will have to wait until I go into town (nearest WalMart) an 80-mile round trip, but I will go this week and have some for you.
He is a sweet-natured gelding, 10 years old, AQHA registered. He's a chunk, too, very typy. Big butt, good neck. All bay. Sweet-looking head and eyes which is to be expected as he is Doc Bar twice over.
Also has (for those who know AQHA foundation sires) Poco Bueno and Wimpy. He is also a double grandson of a foundation sire I hadn't heard of named Pretty Buck. I looked up Pretty Buck on the net and he was a Waggoner ranch sire, out of a Rainy Day Mare. Those a good lines. Pretty Buck mainly showed at haltere.
But all those lines are performance lines, not racing. He has a very smooth trot and lope. Well, I am excited about him.
Went down to the pasture this a.m.just to look at him and get some pictures.
He was in a lot about the size of a city block for a year so I am just letting him get to know my mare and donkey and graze to his heart's content on my 30-acre pasture. He came right up to me.
Mine mine all mine!
How exciting :~D
Thrilled for ya, look forward to your pictures :~D
I suppose if they walked it off and were fine, then goodie for them, I just think they were putting their horse at risk if they didn't medicate for a colic. I was curious if those horses might have been some of the ones who later died. Would they have medicated earlier if they were home? probably wouldn't hesitate.
How exciting! I'm so happy for you! :-D
Thank you. I'll keep your professor in my prayers too.
Some rides are two day events, 50 each day, but most times, yes, the horse can go home and relax at the end of the day.
Impatiently waiting for pictures :)
LOL! I guess she had to take it out on somebody. I've seen Tennessee do something similar and take a bite out of one of the younger horses when I'm doing something that he doesn't like, like being slow with the feed buckets at suppertime. He knows better than to be ill with me so he just takes it out on the next closest target.
Not yet. I asked the vet about it when I took Bob and Grace for their Coggins tests on Saturday, but he didn't remember it. I can understand why he wouldn't though because he was so busy that he barely had time to turn around. I still want to quiz the other neighbor who initially told the guy where the horse was, to see how well he knows him.
WEll, one case in particular that I thought the rider made the wrong decision was actually Celia:\. It was at a ride that was particularly hard, because the mileage was off. We were doing more miles then was thought, so before anyone figured that out, everyone was really pushing their horses hard because we weren't making time. Beings as everyone was late, they checked and then figured the mileage was off. It was also very hot and humid, and in the toughest terrain in our region. That ride is still remembered as the ride from hell.
I pulled the second day, it just wasn;t worth it, because the adjustment they made still wasn't helping. I went out, but still couldn't make the times. Of course after it was all over, and only 2 riders finished on time, they decided not to penalize anyone for lateness. But because I had pushed her so hard the day before she was tired, and I just didn't think it fair to keep going.
Anyway, after she came in the first day, she fed Stormy before he had properly cooled off. She believes that is what caused him to colic. So here's a horse who has done 30+ miles at over 5mph, and she walks this already tired horse for several more hours...Now, I don't immediatly run for the vet or meds when I've had a colic. It depends on the why's, whatfore's, and how seriously in pain the horse is acting. Some mild colics can be fixed by some walking, a trailer ride, or just leaving them alone if they are not rolling....BUT even if it's a mild colic I would not ride the horse for AT least a day, probably more.
She went ahead and went out the next day, and finished, and she says it was the right decision because the horse did it....I'm sorry, he might have done it, but that doesn't mean he SHOULD have had too, IMO. I was very disappointed in her over that. We've never talked about it, because I know she's already taken some flack over it, which she needed too. That was just wrong. She still defends it, but I don't think she'll do it again. Another horse colicked that day, and that rider pulled even tho her horse recovered with no meds. I think Celia in her heart knows what people thought now, and realizes it wasn't right.

There's certainly always competing interests in horse sport and recreation, and we always have to balance the desires of the rider to win, or at least finish, and the best interests of the horse, which we often have to guess at. I'd have pulled.
That she 'got away with it' and yet still has regrets indicate it's never an easy decision.
Sounds like a ride I'd have pulled from just for the heat... ugh!
Well, Got the yard done....I'm out to mow pasture...
Sorry to say, that yes I am.. :( High winds and a lot of rain the past two days. There goes my tan. We did manage to get to the beach Sunday and the casino last night. Going to try Disney tomorrow, if not too bad. I am just hanging at the condo today and thought I would log on and do some catching up. A lot going on here. Lots of cool pictures of rides, Barbie dolls..lol
Duchess, hope your husband is better. Barb, congrats on the new horse. Everyone stay well. Storm is moving up the East coast.
Stay safe:)
Becky
LOL Impressive - I'd have sure moved if that guy pointed at me.
You take care down there and be ready to bug out if any bad storms head inland to you.
Tue and Thur are my riding days but dang it's hot and I'm tired tonight. I'm gonna take a nap and think about this:')
