This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I almost bought another horse yesterday. 20 years old. The owner "thinks" he's a Tennessee Walker. Not sure about that though. Thank goodness common sense kicked in. I do not need another horse. I wanted him though.
Did you see anybody ride him? Did he gait?
I've always liked those. I've seen some really nice looking ones here lately in magazines that were built more like a wooden frame suspended from the ceiling by chains or rods with metal rods running across it width-wise to hang the pots on. The whole thing would be finished out with crown moulding and trim around it to match the rest of the trim in the house. It looked very nice.
But then you have to have all these pretty copper-bottom pans that you never use, or they wouldn't stay looking that pretty.
A lot of them come with a coating on them to keep them looking shiny. You actually have to remove it with laquer thinner before you cook with them or you'll ruin them. I've bought quite a few of them over the years and have them in storage, along with all the rest of the stuff I've bought for the time when pigs fly and I actually build a house. ;o)
I saw him cantering. Nice. He looked just like a regular horse to me. She says his gait is different though. I'll take a picture. He might be part. He's a sweet little guy. I thought about him for the kids but in 4 months his keep would equal his price:')
I would want regular stuff , I think. I like nice but funtionable.
I know you aren't really serious about buying him, but if you were, I wouldn't buy him unless I actually RODE him or saw him ridden and he performed a good smooth gait. You'd be buying a pig in a poke otherwise. Unless you just liked him as a horse and didn't care anything about his gait, then it wouldn't matter. But some gaited horses can actually be rougher than a trotting horse if they're pacey, so it's something to think about. Good smooth gaited horses are a joy to behold.
He belongs to 4 girls who are having to sell him. My heart said if I bought him he wouldn't have to go anywhere. My head said no. Now if pigs start to fly and I get my place out in the country, then more checking him out might be required:')
Oh and I agree. I wouldn't buy a horse before I saw someone ride it and I rode it, if it was going to be my riding horse. I just mentioned because the owner thinks he might be a TW. That's the fun thing about grades:')
That is a gorgeous flower. I've never seen a big leaf magnolia - really cool.
Your flower beds look so nice. I wish I had the time and energy to do some gardening here. I sorta just ignore the weeds :)
Frog, your gardens are beautiful. All that hard work paid off. I still need to buy flowers to plant. This 90 degee heat wave, keeps me inside. They are predicting storms today, then cooler temps.
Morning everyone! I'm off to the beach today!
Good morning :~D
I haven't had much horsey to report, but yesterday it dried out here so I could mow lawn... maybe someday soon we'll ride again!
The twins continue to progress.
Thanks for all your good wishes..
We had some "moments" with Mom who developed a mild infection post partum, but the Docs @ State took care of it in a day or two and all went well.
They say she'll be able to breed again.
The little colt is full of attitude, which is why he's done so well. His big sister is NOT the boss of him and when they run down pasture he always takes the lead.
The vets figure he'll finish at least 15 hands, which is what Dad was.
The filly is quiet, gentle and looks more like the warmblood side of the family.
Sometimes they move shoulder to shoulder in perfect step and their lovely movemet and good bone, is already well displayed.
The whole blessed event was nothing less then a miracle. The vets told us it was a 1/50,000 shot that all three would survive, let alone be normal and perfectly, beautifully healthy.
Will keep you all informed..
Thanks again.
Please do :~D
Good afternoon.
I've been busy catching up on things around here that I let go the last few weeks. Taking a break here now, for lunch.
I hope you get to ride someday soon:)
The chiropractor guy is suppose to come sometime today to recheck Harley....
I went to the feed store this morning and found the bit that Celia loaned me, and got some horse treats to do the stretching exercises with him again.
I'm probably not going to ride again till next week.
We got a nice shower here thru the night, which is a double edged sword. We needed it, but it makes it awful humid.
Becky
Yeah - me too - but I don't have the excuse of a major event :~D
It's dry today, but another system is expected. On the bright side, next week looks pretty good :~D In the long run, I don't mind that we're getting some good late soaking rains, it's gonna be drying out here before we know it.
On the upside, I haven't been Buting Bay, and he showed pretty happy feet last night and today when they were running around. I like to see that, it makes me feel good when I can see he does.
Interesting development.
The chiropractor guy, Kirk, showed up. Harley is doing good. This guy is a trainer too, and knowing that they have lots of contacts I asked him if he bought and sold horses. He said yes. I told him about Rocky and Belle, and that I'd like to sell them.
I showed him their papers, and he asked me if Belle was broke to ride. Since I've always wondered if a chiropractor couldn't help her I told him all about her. I had planned on selling her strictly as a brood mare. I don't want to be responsible for anyone climbing on her. Any way we talked awhile and he said he'd like to see her, from what I told him, he thinks she just needs some adjustment. He did say that even with adjustment at this point she will have some mental issues, but that was his specialty working with problem horses. I asked him if he wanted to go see her and we did.
Make a long story short, when it dries up (it's raining here), he's going to come back adjust her (he thinks her hips are out too, and maybe her back), he worked on her back a bit. Then HE is going to saddle her and maybe get on depending on how she lunges. He thinks my saddle was probably too small for her too, and that my new one could make a big difference. Which makes sense, I've never understood how that saddle could fit her and not Harley. But I never had any visible signs like dry spots, rubs, etc.
Anyway, he took copies of their papers with him, and is going to call back when it's dry. Quick story. The ride last weekend was his first CTR. At this ride there was a horse there that was really really behaving bad. Rearing, straight up. I never saw it just heard about it. The horsemanship judge told the rider she was going to have to beat this horse, to make it stop. The girl did, and finished the ride. There were 2 other riders, (I saw one of them and it did make me sick too), that were seen beating their horses. The man I saw was hitting his horse repeatedly in the head and neck with his fist, but of course it wasn't helping the problem, which I couldn't tell what it was. The sad thing is this man and another lady both placed, the man got 2nd from the horsemanship judge. Kirk was really POed about it. He does not believe that sort of "training' helps anything and was appalled that the judge TOLD the girl to do that. He told me today he sent a complaint to the NATRC directors, and they are investigating...
Anyway his attitude gives me some hope that if he bought Belle she would not be abused but maybe be able to be made useful again other then having babies.
