This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
IIRC, Dr. Kellon advised about 3 tablespoons per day. If your horse does not like the extra salty taste, you can split it up between feedings. I have one of those but as a general rule, split up all their supplements over the day's feedings appropriately. Since I feed their pellets twice a day, I split the supplements in half for each feeding.
I'm gonna try it too coz I just had to scrub mine out yesterday and it was GROSS! That old green and red algae stuff was all over it, and that's after only a week or less. 5 horses can go through a LOT of water.
I wonder if the mineral salt that you can buy at the feed store is similar. I usually get the 50# brown salt blocks, but the last time I went to buy one the guy asked me if I wanted horse salt and I asked him what the difference was and he said that it was granulated and specially formulated for horses, whereas the blocks were more or less for cows. I bought a bag just to see how they'd like it, intending to just dump it in a bucket and hang it in the barn for them to lick when they wanted to, but swear I think they'd eat it all up in one sitting if I did that and I couldn't afford to buy that much. It only came in a 25# bag for one thing, and it was twice as expensive as the block on top of that, so you paid twice the price for half as much. I put about 3 inches in the bottom of the bucket and it was ALL gone the next day. So I decided to just buy a block to put in the bucket the next time and save the granulated stuff to put over their feed a couple of tablespoons at a time. You may think this is gross, but I tasted it, and it's not as salty as the block and it seems to have a bit of a sweet taste to it as well. So it may have some molasses mixed in with it. I guess I need to get the ingredients tag off the bag and compare. I don't remember there being one on there, but there's bound to be one on it SOMEWHERE.
I am going to try the Cider Vinegar too. We have tried the stuff you can put in a little floater every 180 days and that does not work well at all. Vinegar is good for them too.
Whoa. Look at Harley.
I'll bet Becky and Harly are already on their way to the ride.
I don't think I have ever seen the loose bagged salt product. I'll have to ask next time I am in. It HAS to have an ingredient tag somewhere.
Probably:') How's the babies?
My saddle bags are in. They are very light weigh. I like that.
Now you just need to find the chance to try them out and see which combo you like best. They are very light weight :)
Yeah. I've got to figure out how to attach them too. The horn one looks the easiest:')
Fighting a summer cold, and getting ready for a horse show tomorrow - weather reports are not good, right now calling for wind, rain and snow above 6000 ft :( Maybe it will all blow out before 5am tomorrow morning.
Duchess, Sorry to hear you are sick. Good Luck at the horse show. Kids have one Sunday and Monday. Temps are suppose to be close to 90. Too hot too early for this time of year.
Morning.... it's raining here... I don't think we'll ride at all... gonna spend this long weekend doing ~something else~. Today we're gonna go to the beach house, so there's that.
I spose Becky's under way...
Going to take it easy for a little while and then get my spring cleaning done this weekend :) and finish planting, I hope.
Good luck to the kids at their show. We could sure use some 90' weather here.
I wish you my 90 degree weather! If I could I would send it.
Sorry to hear about the cancellation.
I am going once again to look for a horse tomorrow.
Good luck on your search. 90 degree weather here isn't too bad, since we have no humidity. Water and a hat usually makes it comfortable. I remeber the 90 degree temps with the humidity when I lived in the south though. That was miserable.
Hope you are feeling better. I can now put an additional 3.8 lbs in the saddle horn bag:')
Wow, 3.8 is a lot. This is adding up pretty fast.
Yeah. No breads. No sugars. Some days I think would sell Sarah Lee for a hamburger:')
Does you husband carry water in the bags or does he carry a canteen?
