The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

The spout is a little flaky. Ours doesn't drip, I keep it full all the time, but it would sure not last long if you were using it alot... it's just plastic.

Well Harley IS going to learn to let me throw the sponge off him and reel it in:), just won't happen till we get back.

We tried both the plastic and a metal spout. No luck. I was worried I wouldn't be able to siphon. I'd only ever tried siphoning gas, and was leery of getting a mouthful, so never sucked on the hose hard enough:) (That really sounds bad doesn't it:), but with just water I don't have a problem, and funnily enough I never get a mouthful. But I can't siphon gas....I've gotten mouthfuls too often, and now just can't do it:)

It's too dangerous to siphon gas that way, I don't blame you. It's bad enough when I siphon and get a mouth full of fish tank water :~/

EEEWWWWWWWWW:)

Mack and Charlie can both siphon anything. But the few times I've tried with gas, I ALWAYS got a mouthful. And man that will make you sick for the rest of the day. I hate it.

Man I'm tired. I didn't sleep well last night worrying about getting that water barrel. I had forgotten completely about needing something for water till Celia reminded me yesterday. Worried about it all night in my sleep. I had to go clear over to a neighboring town to get that barrel, and I wasn't sure if the place still carried them. And, I don't know why, but I'm more stressed over this ride then I was last year. Must be old age that makes you worry about EVERYTHING...jeez....just can't figure out what's getting to me...

I don't know... It's been raining all week, chances are it might stop by the weekend, but I don't think that's sure. Good chance of muddy trails regardless.

And I'm still feeling a bit mournful about that kitten. That was a big emotional exercise yesterday.

But that's gloomy, and not 'lightening up' anything.

I took this picture this morning, of what I think is rather bizarre behavior from both cat and squirrel. :~D

They aren't on the same platform, the squirrel is actually on the platform on the other side of the tree, but they almost were, before I came out there and the cat came and looked at me. The cat just sits and looks, and occasionally will jump toward the squirrel, but the squirrel comes right back.

LOL,,,looks like he might be.

That is crazy:) The squirrel just doesn't seem threatened at all. Strange.

I am sorry about the kitty:(. I was thinking of her last night too...like I said, I'm worrying about EVERYTHING:\

And to be honest, I'm not stressing about the ride itself, looking forward to that, except for the heat, just about leaving, being gone, knowing nothing/no one can function without me here:). Do you think I think a bit highly of myself:). I'm worrying, gawd, if it's this hard to leave for a weekend, how am I going to manage a week...but I am, I'm determined too.

I'm like you in that regard, so I understand... I obsess on change and trips and risks of this or that, I'm a bundle of nerves about stuff like that. But it's exciting. And the anticipation is half the fun :~D

Fun is stress :~D You've been waiting a long time for another ride like this.

Is this at the place with the cliffs you went to? Or the place you went to for the last CFR?

No, this is a totally different place.

This is on a privately owned ranch, north of Tulsa. It's one of my favorite rides because it's not so hard (terrain wise), as Ark, (altho I love Ark. because it IS such a challenge), but still challenging enough to be interesting. I've been to a few rides where the terrain was so easy, that the ride got boring actually.

This ride is the only time this ranch allows horses to be rode there. It's more of a corporation ranch. I don't think anyone "live" there now, but cattle are kept there, and there is a Boy Scout camp there. There is an estimated are of 30,000 acres. We pretty much do the same trails every year that I did it. But there are hills, rocks flat areas, woods, and pastures.Good mix.

The camping area is nice. They have a very nice pavillion where all the meetings are held, with nice bathroom/shower facilities. It can be hard if you get there late to park where you can be in the shade, but since entries are down, that probably won't be a big problem.

I've seen cows a few times. I think they actually try to move them out of the area of the ride. There is a lot of cross fencing, and they leave gates open for the ride, so I think that's why they move them out. The few times I've seen them was back in the woods:). I imagine they just got missed:)

I've ridden Harley thru a herd of cows once. he was fine, thank goodness.

Waaaay back when Bay was owned by Bob, Bay and I herded a loose cow, badly, back where she belonged. I was kindof self teaching on exactly how to herd a cow... :~D Spooked her a couple times by getting too close, then she'd just go off running where I didn't want her. So we figured out how to stay back just enough to keep her moving :~D I was proud of myself when we got her back, but after a couple missed approaches, it took another guy blocking the road with a truck to actually turn her in at the gate. Amatuer hour. Anyway, I think it was the first time Bay'd ever seen one, and I'm not sure he's seen one since :~D

Took a picture of my corn crop... it's turning a little yellow, I think too much rain.
