This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Oh, and just so you know:), batteries are at the top of my to get list:) I'm going to buy the biggest carton I can find:).
Becky
Well good! We do want pictures after all :~D
Bring my number and check in with us too after the first day too if you can :~D
I just fed ours, it's been pouring and gonna rain all week... So I had them in last night.
As much as I hate riding in the rain, I might just not mind it this time:)....I guess if I'm wishing for a good weekend, there is nothing wrong with wishing for perfection:)
Becky
Perfect? Nice overcast day with a breeze, where it rained the night before just enough to keep down the dust :~D
Good Morning.
Good morning. Only a couple of more days of work then a long weekend off to play with the horses!
Oh yeah....there's that truck and house cleaning that needs done too. Yuck!
Hey, welcome to the thread. I see by your profile page that you now live in Florida. There's some really nice horse farms in the Ocala area. They always make my mouth water when I've driven past them on vacation.
It sounds like you've got great plans for you and your family. There are several posters on this thread who have or do homeschool and can give you lots of good information about that, so don't hesitate to ask. None of us seem to have any problem with voicing our opinions or offering advice. ;o)
One of the best trail rides I ever went on was at Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines. My best friend and I got up very early on Thanksgiving morning to go for a ride before the family festivities. Since it was the rainy season, we put on those long yellow slickers.
We rode through the jungle in that lovely gentle rain with the tropical mist all around us and that sweet sweet smell of the jungle flowers in the air. As long as I live, I will never forget that ride.
Good luck on your ride this weekend!
Well, it's a good thing for that little stray kitty that I brought her in. Two vets looked at her, and both decided there was no way she'd survive birthing... there's at least two VERY large kittens they could feel, probably more, but like the vet said "Doesn't matter how many there are if the first one is too big". I don't know what she weighs, but the total weight of her on the table IN the crate (the exam table itself is a scale) was 11 pounds.
She's advanced but not yet full term, and the options discussed were to put her down, wait till term and do a c-section, or do a c-section and spay now. That's what I decided to do. What else can I do? She was purring on me. I didn't want to wait, and risk early labor at home that would end badly. If the kittens are alive and viable, they'll save them. He wasn't hopeful they would be. He didn't feel them move at all even when he squeezed them, but he said that's not always telling.
I talked to the vet a long time (I have a lot of history with this vet). We talked about how we had brought our kittens in early to be fixed so we WOULDN'T HAVE TO DO THIS!" and asked "Why do these things always end up on my doorstep?" I have a reputation as a sucker softy, I guess. He said "Well, look at the size of your file here... And I know there have been more that are in the deceased file".
Sigh, sometimes it's a hard world for the little things.
I left her there... they'll work her in today.
OHHHHHHHHHHHH. I'm so envious:') Good for you.
Oh wow. Congratulations!!
Oh, sorry about the kitty. She's lucky she found you.
We're back, a little sooner then I expected, but Celia got hot. I think I was doing fine because I had lots of water with me. I offered her some but she didn't take any. The horses seemed to be doing very well. The heat takes the spunk out of them, but they were still moving good. I think we will both be fine.
Becky
Well, good for you... I assume the foot looks like it's holding together well?
Do you freeze your water bottles? We do, freeze it 3/4 full so it stays cold all day.
Did you find a bag that'll work?
You should hit that vet up for a break since you've got such a thick file, and this is a charity thing anyway:)
My old vet that died use to give breaks when it was a rescue thing.
Becky
Mine does too. He will treat them for cost usually. Probably why he is so expensive:')
I'm going to freeze all my water bottles, that will help keep the ice chest cold, won't have to buy ice. They will thaw enough as I need them. Hopefully it will keep the chest cool enough till Sun. I hate putting ice in a chest, everything just gets soggy then.
Haven't looked for a bag yet, that's what I'm doing this afternoon, when I go shopping with Jenny. Waiting on her to get here.
Becky
I don't see how you could have done anything else. Even if he kept her at the shelter, no one would be there if she went into labor after hours.
That's a good idea. I'll have to remember it. I hate stuff getting wet in my cooler and having to drain them.
We talked about that I had to decide how much I wanted to do for all the sick and injured and abandoned of the world, and that most of the vets and staff there were always "hitting our limit" on how many he and all the staff could take in, of animals that just get left on their doorstep in the night, in critical shape.
He didn't offer a break on the surgery, but he didn't charge me for the office call or the blood tests he ran for Feline Leukemia or the test for worms either.
