This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I pay around $200 per year right now for $10,000 in coverage but Henkell is only 7. The older the horse, the more expensive the coverage. I'll have to get my policy out to read it, but I think it only covers colic surgery up to the face of the policy.
I am not particularly worried about colic with my horse. Trakehners are very tough, healthy horses. But, I have had enough past experience to know that even the healthiest, best managed horse can colic. The major medical covers most everything but is much more expensive than mortality and requires a full vet workup.
I lost an older horse a few years ago to colic AFTER deciding not to insure him anymore due to his age. That left me with no horse and no money to replace him. I swore that would never happen again. The $10K would not replace Henkell with an equivalent horse (same age, same training, same quality) but would give me a headstart. I'd have to purchase young again to get the same quality horse. I couldn't afford Henkell now if I were looking for his equivalent in the markeplace ( it would cost me $30-$35K).
Very interesting, and I can see why you do it for values that high. My lil ole trail horses wouldn't break the bank to replace, even if it broke our hearts.
The major medical insurance is certainly something I've thought about, in that it's tempting to choose a predictable cost, at a predictable time, to cover an unpredictable and fixable calamity, particularly if it happens at a bad time financially. I've thought about it even for my dogs.
There is so much metal in that leg I wonder how the bone can heal around all of it?
I just got back from having Harley's foot worked on. I'll get pictures later.
If this stuff really bonds to the hoof as everyone says it will, I'd say we are in good shape now. Chris filled in the chunk and also put some on the other side around the nails. Then he put a nail into where the chunk was missing. He said it felt like it went in good and tight.
Only time will tell now.

Heh... I know. There's almost so many screws there's no room for bone. I wonder if it doesn't encourage some bone growth just to try to calcify around the foreign object.
He would definitly set of metal detectors, wouldn't he:)
I know just using him as a stud it won't matter, but I wonder if with all that metal his leg will lose some flexiblity...

The ankle's been fused and screwed straight, so he'll definately have a hitch there. But it's the only way to make it strong enough I think.
A friend gave me some of that hoof bond and then I didn't have to use it. I always wondered how it worked.
My white mare has a gravel traveling down, and when it reached the end of the hoof I may have to use it.
Always good to have some around.

This stuff he used, I think, must be the same stuff that they used for the pour in pads that tuffy and put in Tuffy's foot. I guess if it bonds good enough to stay on the bottom, it should hold up on the side.
Very expensive, tho, IMO. Once these tubes are opened, (two tubes of stuff that mix and come out one spout), they have to be used then. Can't be saved if you don't use the whole thing. $35. :( We barely used maybe a 1/4 of it. One set of tubes will do pads for 2 feet.

This stuff has to have a special applicator to put the tubes in. Kind of like a caulking gun.

Glad to hear about the bondo job. Sounds like interesting stuff, and a little pricey to me too, but if it keeps you from pulling out of the ride that you've already paid for then it'll be worth it. I'm looking forward to the pics too.

Chuckling... Interesting stuff. Looks like plastic. If it's hard it ought to work. Did he nail into that at all then? Is that what I see real close to the toe? or is that something else?

Yes, that is a nail shining. The nail will have gone thru only the bondo, There is no hoof wall there, so the stuff needs to really bond to the hoof to hold. Supposedly it does.
It doesn't look to me that it's a real tidy job:), but if it holds I don't really care.
