The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

What a cool link. Wouldn't it be great to have a talent like that?

Do you feed it to them?

I've never heard that before.

I always wanted to be artistic but heck, I can't even read my own handwriting.

Yes, paprika is just put in the feed. As to how or why it works, I don't know. One of the old tricks, like wiping horses down with kerosene will really make their coats shine. Probably all disallowed so we will pay big bucks for Quciksilver and Show Sheen and the like :)

Her art is just incredible. I'd love to have one of the pieces (someday when I have more money than I know what to do with).

"like wiping horses down with kerosene"

Just put a sign on your horse's tail that says, "no smoking, flammable horse."

When I went to that seminar a while back, the Purina guy talked about a new supplement that they have come out with. If you feed it to them all the time it is suppose to make their coats very shiny, lots of fat in it. But it can also be given starting a few days before an event to give them added energy. We got coupons so I bought some to give before a ride. Too expensive to feed all the time, and I don't think, at least Harley actually needs it all the time. It's called Amplify. Have you heard of it. 1lb is suppose to be equal to 4lbs of regular feed. Might be good to use with a hard keeper too. I'm going to start top dressing Harley's feed on Mon. It was an interesting talk on carbs/fat/protein and how a horse uses those things to get energy. Protein was the least effecinet. If they burn protein as energy, they are burning muscle mass. Carbs is for short quick bursts of energy, and fat for longer extended needs of energy. Sounded good for long distance horses.

Good Morning.

Finally, we are clearing up here. A little cooler than normal (hi 50's) but so nice to have some sun.

Cjshapi, McCormick does sound familiar, but I really am not sure if I know him.

Duchess, that is so true. I was wondering about the Paprika too. Hungarian that I am, it's a staple here. :)

I really enjoyed the Purina talk I went to here. Fascinating information about the feeds. Is Amplify the one for race horses, etc.? We thought that would be a good one for the endurance horses when we started endurance again.

I have never understood why it was outlawed (if it was) since it's a natural spice we all use in the kitchen. Maybe it wasn't outlawed, people just quit using it because newer, expensive, is better?

I think he might have mentioned it was designed for race horses...

That's why I asked you about it for long distance, since you guys do endurance:)

Just wondering if you had tried it. I'm wondering if I'll really see a difference. Harley, so far seems to have alot of stamina, so I'm not sure he really needs it. I don't really think what I do is all that hard on them if the horse has been conditioned properly for longer distances. The Open division might be different. Doing the distance in 2 days, shouldn't be as hard as one like you do. I've always thought that NATRC set their standard a bit high, beings as the horse has to check out with the same amount of energy as he checked in with, or you can lose points. I mean on check in a horse can just be excited and seem very energetic at check in, but by the end of the weekend, not necessairly be tired just calmed down, and then too, it seems they should be given a bit of room to be a little tired after the ride, I know I am:) I figured out tho, to work with the horse to lunge very calmly and slow on check in, then they don't have as high a standard to reach for check out. But if you have a new or hyper type horse, they can show a lot of energy just from the excitment at the start.

It doesn't appear to make any sense to ask a horse to have as much energy at the end of competition as at the beginning. Even heavily conditioned horses will be tired at the end.

TE Gold Eagle arrived this morning - another big colt, two white stockings, blaze and white over his hips. He arrived while I was at work, I rushed home over break, lunch hour to see him - think maybe I'll call him Flash.

Back at work but I'll try to post pictures tonight when I get home.

Good afternoon - Ramius and Ruthy just left... didn't do anything horsey, just visited, and went out for a big breakfast this morning.

Now settling down to watch the Preakness.
