The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, we're glad to hear that you're ok. We were all a bit worried when we didn't hear from you. That's sad about the other people though, especially the little girl.

No kidding. It's done.

About the shelter. If I built again I would build one. Some are converting a room ot closet as you say. We are researching that. They make kind of like a plastic closet you can put under ground too. Not gonna help with floods if water gets in your house though.

BladeRider and I were just discussing this excerpt from an MSNBC story about the storms in your area...

A half mile away, Christy Adame emerged from a closet to find her horse barn gone, one of her horses in a tree and the smell of propane so strong that officials wouldn't let a neighbor shoot his suffering cow, which had been impaled on a two-by-four. "We realized this was the real thing this time," Adame said. "This was not just a warning."

That's horrible! I'd just die if that happened to one of my horses. How he heck do you get a HORSE out of a tree (if it was even still alive) without killing it in the process?!

Yes, I live in Northern Ohio. Is the place you are showing at Brady's Lake or Brady's Run? I was not sure of the indoor arena, because it has been a few years since I have been there. We used to belong to the Penn-Ohio Horseman's Assoc, and showed quite a bit in Meadville, PA and Brookfield, OH. I hope the weather is ok for you. Chance of rain for the next couple days, so maybe it will clear out.

I won my first class at the Penn Ohio Morgan Arab show. Small world! Our show is at the WPQHA grounds in Harlansburg. The lucky thing is that the ring has great drainage.

Hopefully I'll get some fun pics to share.

I wouldn't be too optimistic that the horse would survive his injuries. But, getting him out of the tree would be difficult unless he was dead. They would have to bring in a crane with a sling to get him down alive.

Once I knew that my family was safe, I started worrying about the horses. We have 2 new foals (1 month and 1 1/2 months old). I was worried about the hail, the high winds, and the tornado. But, everyone was fine.

Even with shelter, horses are not safe because the tornado takes away the shelter. My daughter thought that they would go into the woods behind the house and be safer there. But this tornado was ripping up the trees too. The only safe place is out of its path completely. Even in a storm shelter you can get hurt if your door isn't sufficiently strong enough to withstand the pressure. I have heard of folks being sucked up through the torn off door.

In the Jasper, Texas, tornado from a few years ago, people were carried as much as a half-mile away before being deposited in strange places like trees. I saw video of the poor cow on the local Fox affiliate this morning. The reason they wouldn't allow the shot is that it could spark and set off the propane in the air. The tornado must have torn up a few propane tanks in the area too. Lots of those in rural areas.

My horses were running around like the devil was after them during the storm yesterday afternoon. When I got to the barn it hadn't started raining real bad yet, but the wind was whipping every which way, and they wouldn't come into the barn. I can't say as I blame them because that old barn is made out of tin and it's rickety. They much preferred to stand huddled together out in the middle of the pasture with their tails turned into the wind. It was kinda funny coz you could tell exactly which way the wind was blowing at any given minute by which way they turned their butts. I would've hated to have been out in all that, but it was their choice and I guess it was the safest place for them. I rode it out in the car because the lightning was so bad.

One of the most amazing things I have seen is that video, (I'm not sure if it was Jerrell or not )was where an F5 carried or blew a baby girl a mile or so away with a bunch of debris. A cop stopped to move some down limbs and there she was in the road, in the mud. Just dirty, scared and bruised.

Oh ok, I have been there a couple of times. Real nice place. At least you have stalls to get in. We are going to Sun Beau Valley in Ravenna, OH this Sunday. They have Walk-Trot classes for the Granddaughter.

My husband doesn't worry about much. Says that's my job. Kind of spooked me though. He's on his way home and he called and asked me if I had been outside. The air is very heavy and nothing blowing. Said it reminded him of our last hail storm. He and his boss got caught out in it and were pounded pretty good.

I think that was the Jarrell tornado. It was an F5. Discovery channel or somebody else did a special on it. There were a lot of tragic stories from that horrible day.

I remember reading an article a long time ago in Reader's Digest called "Day of the Tornados" about that year over 100 tornados hit the upper mid-west in one day.

We are clear until Friday night when we have another chance at thunderstorms. These warm humid days build up energy and then all it needs is some cooler air coming in to set things off. We need more rain but I'd rather get it from a nice long soaking rain.

We were still at 101 an hour ago. The cold fronts don't mix well with that. It's thundering big time and the lights are flickering but so far no rain. Happens a lot here though. It just goes right above us.

I would like to see the weather channel do a special on outdoor animal behavior as storms approach. Crap, I just lost my cable.

I think the prospect of a tornado is about the scariest thing I can imagine, because you might know it's coming, but can't protect against it. It'd be something to see though. Fascinating.

Yeah, I've been way too near a couple of times. I've only seen one though. It was a water spout over a bay in Galveston. It was facinating. I just stood there watching and finally heard people yelling at me to get inside. It was just hard to not watch.

Do you know that guy "Dennis" in Collin County on TWC? Cool guy. He had his frame and box spring up and said he was looking for his mattress now and going to have to find his dresser too. Stated that's life and just glad he was alive. Not the kind of person the media usually goes looking for.
