This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've always ridden Arabs that have a fairly upright carriage. I get on a Western Pleasure type, or even Cyn, and I think "Where's the neck?" Bays neck is always 'right there'.
I don't know but imagine that learning to ride as a child helps a lot.

Just got back from Walmart. I either bought a plum or an apricot tree. Two different tags:'(. I've got to go out and check on the horses. They got shots yesterday and she called and told me Okie off and standing around or walking stiffly. She said strangles will do that.
I ride western and the heads stay up.
Eddie says he put one's on designed for the weight. He also says the same thing about dry rotting. It's beneath him to explain why to me though.
Hope to hear Okie is doing alright.
Just got in. We did approx. 15 miles. Rode 3 hours, and mostly trotted, and climbed hill. It was great:) Harley was still going strong at the end. He'll have tomorrow off tho.
No pictures, I for got batteries....again:\

Yeah we were moving really fast today. It was a lot of fun:). I'm getting more and more comfortable with the faster pace. That's the pace of the open class. Now if I can just do that for 5 hours, I could go open. I think the horse could, but whew, it wore me out:)

Well, I still get nervous at the faster pace. It's a mind thing. We even talked about that today. I use to not really enjoy riding with Celia because she likes to move. I don't know why but I've always thought if a horse was going to get silly it would be when it was moving. But you know, everytime but one, when I've been dumped it was at a walk. LOL. I beginning to believe Celia that when they're moving they don't get as silly because they're paying more attention to what they are doing.
Harley starts out kind of hyper, and wants to horse race when you get to moving faster. But after about the first hour he'll hit a stride and keep it pretty well. He still is wanting to break to a lope which is OK, IF I tell him too. But when he decides to lope on his own, I've got to slow him down. Lopeing (from what I've been told) is easier for them then the long trot. If I'm by myself we lope often. But when you're riding with other horses it can turn into a race, and can get hard to slow them down. But Harley is catching on.

The longer I sit here the stiffer I get:). It will take me this year anyway to get where I could do that 2 days in a row. Harley is young tho, he's doing great:) He is really tightening up. I've even upped his feed back to where it was last year when I was working him. But his underline is drawing up really nice. He's really looking good. Wish I had batteries:|

I'm sure he does look great though. Are you going to try to enter him in a higher level? What's different in the classes, just the pace, or do they have harder skill tests also?
You both are going to do so well on the CTR - you're going to be in great condition. He is such a good horse :)
There are 2 divisions. Open and novice, there is a division called Competitive Pleasure too, but it does the exact same thing as novice. It's for those who have worked out of the novice class but don't want to go open. The open class goes faster and does 60 miles in the weekend instead of 40. And sometimes, not often the obstacles will be a bit different, harder.
Novice class generally goes 4 MPH, never faster then 4 1/2. The open class generally goes 5 MPH, never faster then 5 1/2. It doesn't seem like that much when talking, but when your riding that extra mph, really makes it seem a lot faster. You don't have time to enjoy any scenery.

Oh, and this year, I'm staying novice, mostly because he's a novice horse:). But until lately I could never see myself doing anything but the novice or CP class...now the longer I have him the more I'm thinking he/we could do it.
But not this year:)
