This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It does sound nutty to people who haven't done it....
Seems perfectly sane to me :~D
Well, actually, I think it's a bit nuts too, and I wouldn't go just anywhere. But I've seen alot of people come and go from your place and everyone came out OK:) LOL So I'm thinking it's pretty safe:)

Heh... If you aren't sure of the footing, it's always good to let someone else go first :~D
Are those mushrooms?
People do tend to get funny looks on their faces when you tell them you have "Internet friends". My husband thinks it's crazy that I belong to an "Internet Saddle Club". I think he thinks I'm going to hook up with some strange man and run off. LOL! I've told him before that it's just a buncha girls and have even let him read the thread, but he's still skeptical. I guess you're either an Internet person or you're not and when you're "not", you think that the people who "are" are crazy. But people used to have Pen Pals, way back before anybody ever even thought of an Internet. So what's so strange about it?!
Well they perfectly round like a ball, and stuck to the leaf. They are not soft, but feel like a thin shell. Light weight and nothing ratteling on the inside. I don't think it's a mushroom, or even any kind of fungus.
????????
Becky
I've seen those before. They're like a egg case. They're hard on the outside like an eggshell and if you break one of them open, it'll be full of fuzzy/webby-looking stuff and I think there'll be eggs in there. I don't know what kind of bug builds them, but they sure are weird.
I don't think it's really strange to visit like we do, but to go clear across country to stay with someone you've never met in person, well, personally it's rather out of character for me, especially by myself. Normally IF I'd do something like this I wouldn't even consider it without Mack being with me:).
Becky
I've been sitting here considering breaking one open. I figured it was some kind of bug egg, I just don't want to have something alive be in it if I crack it,,ugh:)
Becky
Take it outside and crack it. I don't think there'll be anything alive in there, at least not yet, and if there is, it'll probably just be a pupa(sp) or something like that.
Don't bust 'em all though. Save some of them to show the kids. They might need it for a science collection at school or something. We've kept strange bugs in bottles in the freezer before for that very reason. One year when the 17 year cicadas came out, we kept a few in case anybody needed them, coz you wouldn't see them again for 17 years.
I'd vote for breaking it outside... and bring the camera!
I've never heard of 17 year cicadas??? Wow:)
I was wondering if I put it in a jar or something with ventilation if they would hatch. Then I'd know what laid/built it.
Becky
I think it'd be cool to watch one of these being built. I wonder how they do it.
Ok, I'll go break one:)
Becky
It'll be a great adventure :~D
I've got pretty good sense about people, and I think we'll have a great time. I want to dig up a fern for you to take back with you :~D And I want to travel too. I'm regretting that we weren't able to make our trip last year.
Maybe sometime I'll come down to OK and ride and we'll both go together to see Frog's caves.... since she's about to be up to her ears in extra saddles :~D
Depends what you find in the first one :~D
Yeah, they're strange. They're kinda like regular cicadas that come out every year, but even those have been in the ground for a long time, it's just that some of them hatch out every year. But the 17 year ones are like a big brood that hatches out all at once every 17 years and different areas have different broods that are on a different schedule. I found out about all this stuff the last time they hatched out here. You've never heard anything so loud in your life. The woods were just full of them and they were all screaming at once. You could hardly sleep at night if you lived near a wooded area. They looked a little different too. The normal ones are bigger and have a kind of blackish/greenish body and black eyes, but the 17 year ones were smaller and more goldish/brownish with big red eyes. Weird!
LOL! I was thinking about that the other day. I'll soon have 5 ridable horses, and my main riding buddy has 4, and another riding buddy has 2. We could get up a good sized trail ride.
