This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yeah, I feel bad about keeping him in his run most of the day. I let him out for about 1/2 the day today, right before and for alittle while after we got back the first time. He'd been in his run tho since his afternoon feed.
I'll let him out tomorrow morning till we go ride at 11:00.
Becky
Well, I know lunging very long isn't really good for him, but I wanted to do some kind of slow buildup to work again.... get his heart rate up, get some exercise in him before he has to do that and carry weight too. Maybe I'll just run him loose to achieve that, and another ride or two just walking.
Hey. My saddle bag now 1.6 lbs. heavier.
Could it be the type of ground too? Is it easier on all that grass to run?
I understand that about lunging, but 2 minutes each direction shouldn't have been a problem at all.
Becky
:) What did you add?
Try turning him out loose first, see what he does. If he seems fine catch him and lunge him and see how he acts.
And this just occured to me, with the bute you've been giving him, he really shouldn't be hurting.
Becky
So what does that make it all together?
Becky
Nothing yet:')
Circles on a good long lunge line are not that tight. Now if you are lunging them on a line for 20-30 minutes in each direction I could see that being a problem. But 5-10...??????
Becky
I've lost almost 4 lbs.
He shouldn't hurt, unless he needs something ~else~.
Running through my head is whether or not I should step him up to the next level of treatment, which was the Cortizone injections right to the foot. I want him to feel good this summer, and get another good trail season with him. I'm not emotionally ready to see him retire. I don't mind medicating him as much as he needs.
Also running through my head is whether I should be doing something else with his feet.
All these dang doubts, trying to accurately read what I think I'm seeing. I don't want to worry too much when he's fine, I don't want be in denial if he hurts but I want to go anyway. I wish he could communicate to me better.
Good for you! I'm hoping, I'm losing... trying to get out and mow ~something~ every day, whether it needs it or not :~D But we don't have a scale, so I don't know.
Have him exrayed. Then you'd know exactly what you need to do. Personally I would not step him up to the next level without KNOWING he needs it. Isn't there still doubt about his navicular??
I know how frustrating it can be trying to figure something like that out. It takes the fun and enjoyment out of riding, and makes it easy to just not do.
You know me, I don't like running to vets for anything, but at some point it's for the best, IMO, you're there.
Becky
Good for you, But I was wondering how much your saddle bags weigh all together....isn't that what you were talking about???
Sorry for butting into the conversation, I was just curious.
Becky
All my posts are meant for every one. I don't have a bag yet. I'm still looking. Any suggestions?
I know... I was ready to do that! Then the vet came on a really good Bay day, and the vet said he didn't see any reason to.
Phooey.
I talked to both the vet and the farrier about xrays, and they both said it's hard to see anything on definitive on them anyway... save my money.
Oh well, the really encouraging thing about today was, when he was loose running, he danced. He felt just fine, no doubt about that. I really came in feeling pretty good about how he looked. If I just forget lunging, and start riding easy, and be honest about how he does, then I don't really care if lunging is too hard on him or just boring. Lunging is not required in life :~D
When I get my bag though, I decided that the SB weight and contents will weigh no more than I lose. It's just a personal, motivation thing. My husband weights a lot more than I do and he rides her sometimes without problems.
I don't have a bag yet
Cindy, I'm really confused:)
Becky
I think that would be the best thing you could do then.
Just start riding. If he's not gimping at all don't worry, even if he seems slow, or off, or whatever.
Becky
