The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Keep us posted, baby watches are lots more fun than foal watches.

"So he gets grass hay ONLY, and not much of that??? I'd have trouble following doctors orders"

You and me both. If I could get him comfortable enough I'd ride him and exercise the weight off. Maybe I should look at a hot walker.

I want to thank everyone for their support through all of this. Don't know how I would have made it through the crisis without having some understanding horsey people to discuss things with!

I was wondering, does that mean he will have to stay stalled 24/7, do you have any dry lots?

I think you should post that joke all over that farriers forum:), seems appropriate to me.

I wish you got that channel too. I'm kind of thick about some of this stuff, and it might be clearer to be able to discuss it:)

I'm going to run over to the saddle shop today and talk to them about putting tie rings on that saddle rather then the conchos. I'll take my camera and get a picture of the one they have that will be just like the one I ordered.

Good Morning.....it's Friday again!

Time sure does fly. We had a lot of ice yesterday morning.

Tuffy, glad to hear your horse is home and better.

Boy, that's GREAT news about Tuffy! Hopefully he's on his way to recovery now. That's really strange about the Strongid C causing laminitis. I'd never heard of that and I hate that Tuffy had to teach us all about it the hard way.

That's cool that you got to meet that farrier and it sure was nice of him to come, and it was incredibly nice for him to do it for free. It's comforting to know that there are still people in the world who aren't just in it for the money, but for a true love of horses.

The diet part will be hard. I know it would be for me. I guess you'll have to keep him in a corral or dry lot. I need to do that to Tennessee. He's getting as big as a house and I'm beginning to wonder if he's getting equine metabolic disorder. I was reading something about it the other day that said that Walking horses were prone to it and that 17 is about the magic age that they start showing signs. He'll be 18 this May. I'm thinking about putting him in a grazing muzzle this spring to see if that won't slow him down some. He'll hate it, but something's gotta give. He won't even fit in my old 2horse trailer any more.

Cute squirrel! Those ticks should fall off when they get full. It's the females that get big like that and they fall off and lay eggs when they get full. Which probably means you're going to have more ticks around your house. Yuck! But if you keep Frontline on your cats and dogs you shouldn't have a problem. But you might want to check the horses ears periodically just in case. Little Miss Ellie got ticks way down in her ears when she was a baby and I had a time getting them out. She got so sore that she couldn't stand for you to even think about touching her ears.

Ugh - well, I'll have to be on the lookout now, then. I do think there's something about our weather... too wet maybe, that keeps them from being very populous. I've only ever seen them once before on a dog, and that was a long time ago.

I like watching Clinton Anderson too. I haven't watched him in a while. I need to set the DVD to record him.

About the saddle, they make conchos that have swiveling D-rings on them and they look pretty nice. You might see if they have any of those. You can see 'em pretty good on this saddle...

Yeah, I was just this morning asking Charlie if he thought they could/would put some type of tie ring instead of the conchos, and he said they can/will put a small D ring under the concho.

One more thing about ticks, they seem to really like pine trees. I don't know why. Maybe it's the deep pine straw underneath them that they like to breed in, or the rough bark to hide in. But what ever it is, I've known people to cut every pine tree in their yard trying to get rid of them. But hopefully that's only true down here and doesn't apply to your kind of pine trees.

I forgot to tell you all a funny story.

The other day when I was at the saddle shop I was lamenting about having to spend the money to buy a saddle. That that expense was not in my summer budget. Jenny was with me and I said, this may put a halt to my trip to Wa. Stanley asked why I was going to Wa. and I told him to ride horses with a friend. He answered Oh, OK, if it was to go to some political function and you were paying alot for some dinner, I was going to tell you no big loss:). But to ride horses, that's OK.

LOL. I then tried to explain that the friend was a person I've never met in person but have visited with for several years on the internet. Stanley and the girl that works there just stood there open mouthed, looking at me like I was some kind of nut:)

I thought it was funny:)

Hmmm.... Well, ours are firs, not pines... but it could be the same features apply. I'd think if trees and bark was all it took for them to survive, we'd be loaded with them. If I wasn't more worried about poison than I am ticks... I'd spray there. But I spose the area right around the feeder gets so many birds that any ticks that drop off there would just get eaten.
