The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

He's my trainer, Yogi McCormick. Great horseman. Doesn't care what breed they are, just loves to make a soft, happy horse.

He looks terrible in that pic. 48 hours earlier he had a tractor accident and it rolled on his leg and pinned it. 48 hours after that pic was taken he ended up in the hospital. Stubbon man. But VERY talented!

The Stallion I had in high school was an English Pleasure horse...

Of course, this is back when Arabs just had nice pretty action, before the Park Horses took over. He'd also be what's called "Country English Pleasure' now.

Just temporary, to let it grow out... in a year, it'd all be even.

I just don't like roached manes. Harley's mane looked just like that when I first got him. The rubbed off spots caught up in a year with out any trimming or roaching. Horses should have manes, as long, and shaggy as you can get them:).

In a year it would all be sticking straight up like a mohawk. In my experience, a it takes forever for a roached mane to lay back down.

It's funny... I know appys with unfortunate manes, like Bob's horse. It never grows enough to lay over right, so he roaches it. And I roached my Mustang because his was THICK, on both sides of his neck, but never got long enough to look pretty.

But yes, as an Arab person, I like a long natural mane more than the little pulled and banded Western Pleasure manes.

The owners are very active politically and apparently they have horsey threads over there.

Horse threads on DU? The mind boggles. Are they blaming Bush for VEE or thrown horseshoes?

Did a little closer checking. Apparently they were offering to use some of the proceeds from their breedings to help some bigwig DUmmie with medical bills.

Actually a nice thing to do. Just disturbing political views.

Yeah, you can see how much Bluebell's has grown back. It's been almost a year and it's just now long enough to bend over some and tip towards her head. Not the prettiest mane in the world, but it looks better than it did when the middle part was sticking straight up by itself...

I guess it's just a matter of opinion:). I'd rather have an uneven mane then a roached one. I might trim some of that horses longer parts, so it's not quite so uneven, but I wouldn't roach it:)

One bad thing about roaching it is that when you get in a bind and need something to grab hold of in a hurry, there's nothing there. I felt kinda vulnerable up there when I was riding Bluebell and she had no mane. And there's nothing to grab hold of when you're mounting up. I always grab the mane because saddles tend to slip too much for me.

I get my news about DU from PJ Comix here on FR. I visited DU once for 5 minutes. It reminded me of a psych ward where the meds are two hours late. I felt dirty just lurking.

From what I can gather, there is a lot of ill will over there about that fund-raising, and who made how much, and where it all went.

Now I don't want you digging around in 5 y/o trashy bacteria but.....maybe it isn't all trash. That would be a good place to hide sealed money or gold.
