This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yeah - they are :~D I wanted to have the pictures at the beginning to compare!
This is the first spring fever I've gotten :~D
I have a few more wood planters I think I'll put by the porch... it's shady so I think impatiens.
Very pretty. We went looking for shrubs today but I didn't find any I like. I want a line to divide my proprty from my neighbors but I want something that blooms with color.
Tuffy is a gorgeous appy! Your pics are great.
Wow. Just wow. Thanks for sharing.
Frog, congrats on two healthy, beautiful foals!
I just assumed that it was something they normally did. I've never been there when any of the others were born, so I didn't know what they did. I don't think she would've eaten all of it. I took it away after a few minutes because I figured if she was going to be licking something it may as well be the baby. She licked the afterbirth after she delivered it too. It may be an instinctual thing to lick anything that smells like that, so that they will lick the baby when he's born too. I'm just speculating here. You've probably been around more births than I have.
Hey, the flowers look great. I really enjoy doing that kinda stuff and I tend to buy too much too. I get in the garden center and see all the pretty stuff and go a little crazy. I want it ALL!
I've read about mares eating the placenta... it's normal if you let them. When I've been around births, we usually cleaned it up before they could, only because it's icky. I think in the wild, it both gives them a boost of some pretty good protein, and it also helps a little to hide the birth from attracting predators.
These petunias came in a half flat of these little tiny plants. I had no idea there were that many in there till I took them apart. :~D
Yeah, I didn't want to have them laying around anywhere near the foals. I took Bluebell's down into the woods on the other side of the house and buried it, but something had dug it up and dragged it off by the very next morning. I did the same with Truly's. I even buried it in the same hole, since whatever it was had so kindly redug it for me. I'm sure it met with the same fate the next night. Whatever was eating them sure got a feast, because the darned things weigh 4 or 5 pounds a piece.
I think I put Belle's in a bucket and carried it across the road and dumped it. No burying it around here:)
I think I'm going to have to reschedule my farriers next appointment. The six week schedule fell the week after the CTR I'm going to (sent the entry form in today:), I'm going to move it up to the week before, but schedule it for the Mon, before the Fri I leave. That way I've got 5 days before the competiton. Remember last year it fell the week before and that's when I had trouble with the shoe job and he was lame, etc. But we got him over it in time to go, but it worried me the whole ride....To tell the truth, I'm not sure which direction to go in. I guess I could do it at 4 wks. but I don't know if he'd have enough growth to re shoe then....
I don't know what to do.
Becky
That is a predicament! I don't know what to tell ya. 4 weeks seems a bit soon to me too, but you don't want to risk him having loose shoes going into a ride either. Heck, they shoe racehorses every 2wks, so it IS apparently do-able. I guess I'd go ahead and keep the 4wk appointment and make a decision the weekend before, based on how his feet look then. The good thing about the NB shoes is that they have 6 nail holes instead of just 4, so you CAN move the nails around and get them in better spots if you need to. My farrier only uses 3 on each side anyways. I can't remember but I think your guy did too. Are you going to go ahead and get him to put the NB Elite hind shoes on him this time too?
