This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Hey, pepper's a good idea. I'll bet if you kept a jar of water with cut up jalapenos soaking it in it and used that it would work too. Jalapeno juice is wicked.
Morning, I called in again. It feels like I'm taking a lot of time off but I have a lot of sick days and have hardly touched them. I still feel uncomfortable about using them though. Go figure. I told Walmart yesterday that I'm switching to Walgreens who are open 24 hours.
Great ride pics! Pony's a hoot. Bay and Cyn look like they take her theatrics in stride though. I have to put everybody else up in the barn if I want to ride in the pasture coz I'd have at least 3 ripping around me like that and it gets a little hairy.
I'll bet she's coming in season too. Cav's mare used to do that to Tennessee when we were trail riding and she was in season. She'd just STOP and wouldn't budge. We finally had to stop letting her go first when she was like that. It was kinda funny coz Tennessee'd just stand there like "And what do you expect ME to do about it?!"
It's true... Both mares are in season. Poor gals :~D
Sarah Lee can act real slutty at times. The thought has crossed my mind of a gelding trying to mount her while I'm in the saddle so I tend to over-react and run off friendly horses if they come close.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm that way too and it's crazy. I think I feel guilty or something, like I'm playing hooky, even though I really am sick. I'm getting better about it though. You gotta learn to take care of YOU. The work will be there when you get back. If it's urgent enough that it won't wait, then they can get somebody else to do it, and if they don't have anybody else trained as your backup then that's their fault. Hang in there!
Geldings generally don't do that. It's too much trouble. But stallions are another matter. I can understand why Duchess's Bob carries a pistol with him when he rides in areas where there may be wild stallions roaming around. It could get real ugly in a hurry if you were riding a mare in season and one of them decided he needed a poke. ;o)
Only ones that have ever tried to climb on me while riding are babies... and usually when I'm riding the mother.
The pony running around (or both of them, when I'm riding alone) are more a temptation to play than a threat... I worried a little more when it was ecurbh on Cyn and Bay was the one that was loose... the dominant horse being the loose one might have more risk... But Bay knew 'time off' when he saw it, and didn't try to follow Cyn around at all.
Luckily my sister-in-law's brother Gabe and his girlfriend Courtney were there and I rode the rest of the day with them. Gabe was riding a pretty 2yr old black&white SSH stallion and Courtney was riding riding a B&W SSH mare. There was another young guy with them on a nice 3yr old sorrel & white paint stud that kinda reminded me of Tuffy. He had irregular borders like that. Both stallions were very well behaved, even around the mare. After Bob settled down, we had a very nice ride, but even then we didn't let any grass grow under our feet. The paint stud kept up very well too. He appeared to have a very nice smooth trot when we were going slower, and a good easy lope when we were going faster. But it was one of those rides where, when we were moving, I had to sit down, shut up and ride. I enjoyed it and it was was good for me and Bob too. I hadn't ridden at that speed for that length of time in a good while. I think it improves your balance and your riding skills, but I didn't really have time to ride like that and operate a camera too. It was fun. I need to ride with them more often. I've gotten a little soft riding with Shirley all the time. Shirley and I have fun exploring and stuff, and we don't just walk, but every now and then it's fun to just GO.
In other news, we don't have any new babies yet. Every day I think Bluebell's just going to explode. I checked her yesterday afternoon and her bag had really gotten bigger and was hard as a rock. I really think that it's going to be today or tomorrow. The poor girl, she looks SO uncomfortable! And Truly looks the same way. I'm ready for these babies to get here, and I'm sure they are too.
I'm off today (vacation day since I worked Saturday). It's a good thing too :) I did laundry yesterday, using a new (for me) soap that was on sale, Purex Liquid. I woke up last night with my skin burning and itching, tried Benadryl Spray and Calamine Lotion spray to no avail, took a shower and changed clothes, took a Benadryl tablet and the last Zyrtec that the doctor gave me last week, and slept on the couch. Something has really made me sensative and all of the sudden I'm having extreme allergies.
Needless to say, today is being spend sending all of yesterday's laundry through the wash and two rinse cycles with just water to see if I can get whatever out of it.
Sounds like a fun ride, glad Bob rose to the challenge in that kind of group. It is interesting to ride with other people on those rides, and just watch how other people do it, but every time I do ride with someone like Tiffney, who is both 'gung ho wants to go' and doesn't have fun unless she's half lost, blazing her own trail somewhere, I appreciate the calmer, quieter rides with ecurbh more :~D
Hope for nice healthy happy babies soon :~D
You're right, if there isn't the staff to handle things with me out, it's a problem of management, not me - no one should be indespensible.
Praying you have safe and easy deliveries and healthy foals. Anxious now to hear and see pictures :)
Well that's aggravating about the laundry. I guess it just added insult to injury on top of your other allergic reaction. I seem to have developed an allergy to something that is in regular washing powders. I kept this itchy rash all the time, anywhere that my clothes rubbed or got sweaty. I finally had to start using a hypoallergenic, bio-degradable liquid that my (organic crazed, but very nice) sister-in-law told me about. It's called Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent. I get them to pick me up a jug every time they go to the organic co-op they shop at in Nashville and so far I've not had any rashes since I started using it. They have a website and you may be able to order it or they may have a listing of stores that carry their products.

Huh - Have you ever been sensitive to that kind of stuff before?
Thanks for the name and the link - I am guessing that I'm going to have to start using something like that until I figure out what the problem is.
Just what you need huh? I usually use the purex liquid. I have to be careful with my whites since I also add bleach. I'm thinking that is why I get that ankle rash. Maybe sweat or the heat activates it.

I don't know why but I have noticed as I have gotten older that I'm getting more sensative to stuff that used to not bother me.
