The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

And coyotes and wild studs and mountain lions :) He'd just fire to chase them off unless there was a real problem though.

Has he fired from horseback? I'm not sure I wouldn't end up on my ass... hopefully, having hit it at least, since my ride just left ;~D

Hey, I wanted to tell you that I rode Monday without socks in the same type of pants. The rash wasn't aggravated. I wore the same kind of socks to work yesterday. No problem. So it's not the shoes or pants. If it is the socks, I'm thinking that I'm doing something to them while riding because they don't bother me other times.

Hair, I did take a picture but I'm not posting my fat leg on the net:')

I love the scenes in movies where cowboys are riding at a gallop with their legs and have the rifle butted in their shoulder:')

Yes :) he has fired from the back of his horses, and has taken them up to a range of sorts near hear when the boys were target practicing. Not something to try on an unwares, untrained horse unless you have a real good seat.

My favorite movie scene of all time is John Wayne in Rooster Cogburn, where he's meeting the bad guy across an open field and they've come to the conclusion that they're gonna have a shoot-out and he hollers at him "Fill your hand you Son-of-a-B!tch" and takes the reins in his teeth and takes off like at a full gallop like a knight in a jousting tournament, firing a lever-action rifle in one hand, twirling it to re-load, and a pistol in the other. Now THAT'S a horseman!

Now that is a good seat and rein control. I love that movie:')

Heh... I've just always wondered how it would go... The horses are fine around the gun club when we ride out of there, with gunfire in the near vicinity... but right over their ears would take some desensitizing I haven't done... and even after that, they'd undoubtedly flinch when you fired, just from the noise so close.

I've packed on trail rides, but it's never been my intent to fire from horseback. I've always hoped that as long as I had a horse, my best defense was retreat. I've packed to be prepared for some unimagined possibility, sometimes on my person, and sometimes in the saddle bag. It's not as comfortable to wear it, but the thought ~has~ occured to me that I'd be pretty pissed if my horse saw a bear, or a cougar, spooked, dumped me, took off down the trail (with the gun in the saddle bag) and left me looking at a cougar ;~D

I read an article awhile back how someone puts horse treats in a plastic container with a screw on lid so they can't smell the treats. They teach the horse the sound of shaking and what's in it. You could shake it and call" Bay, come back boy or "nice kitty. Want an apple bar?"

Do you think it might be more comfortable to carry it at your back rather than on the side. Most of the time, just the sound of a shot will chase something away, don't know that I'd try to shoot a bear or lion with a hand gun - however if my horse left me to deal on my own, my swearing would probably run it off.

I usually carry in a shoulder holster when I've carried it on me.
