This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've been forgetting to tell you all something that could turn out to be very interesting. When I got my bill at the feed store Fri, on the bottom of it was a sticker about a clinic/seminar type thing, (just speakers), at a local steak house this coming Wed. Celia and I are going. Three topics: Picking the right bit by Bob Mylar, Picking the right feed, I don't remember the name of this guy, and can't find the #@%! ticket:), and Equine Dentistry by a local vet.
The bit guy is the one I'm most interested to hear. Celia has been talking about Mylar bits, and we are anxious to see if this speaker is actually the guy that designs those bits.

Wouldn't you know tho, that a seminar on bits would happen when I finally got brave enough on my own to buy a new one, and it's working good:)

Oil may top 70 tomorrow. This keeps up and people may have to start riding horses again to travel :')
I need to start dropping in feed stores. I miss a lot of stuff. We do have a Tractor Supply opening up soon though. That is going to be so nice.
Do yall ever get a rash on your leg from riding? This is about the 5th or 6th time since I've been horseback riding. It starts about 3 or 4 inches above my inner left ankle and my outer right ankle. It's above where my boots are. It's strange because I don't know what the right leg could be touching?
Just talked to my Farrier. He's coming tomorrow at noon. He's going to put the NB shoes on Harley for me.

Cindy, your boots might be rubbing your legs. Your whole body moves when you ride. I can sure feel, that my did after a short ride this weekend. Out of shape for sure...
Could it be the seam of your pants? I've never had the problem, but a lot of the people I ride with won't wear jeans because they say the seam rubs them. Even tho it seems odd, the outside seam could be what's rubbing your right leg. Last week was the first time I've ever had rub and it sure hurts, but mine was from the new saddle. It's fine now, I guess the skin gets tough or something:)

We have particular problems with this in hunter-jumper, because the stirrup leathers are thin and there is a lot of pivoting going on from the knees down (especially jumping). I have permanent scars and a slight ridge in the leg muscles about 4 inches above my ankles, where the stirrup leather crosses my leg.
This is because I used to ride a lot without proper equipment -- just jump on the horse in blue jeans and mud boots. Now that I (almost) always put on the right stuff before I ride, the scars are fading (don't think the ridge will ever go away though).
If you don't want to ride in full length hunting boots (which really was the solution to my problem -- getting a good pair of boots that fit properly) then invest in a pair of half chaps. The new riding tights are supposed to help too.
If it's on the outside and you don't remember it rubbing... might it be a reaction to something environmental? What kind of rash?
Another possible contributing factor could be your washing machine leaving detergent in your pants. Do you only get this rash when you wear a particular pair of pants? I used to have a pair of very heavy duty canvas pants that just didn't rinse properly on the ordinary washing machine cycle. I had to turn them inside out and wash them with the towels on the long cycle in order to get the detergent out. And they DID feel nasty when they were full of detergent . . .
Well, today is less rainy than yesterday.
I'm busy with work stuff today, so I don't know if I'll do anything horsey, but I'm looking forward to getting there sometime soon... we didn't do a thing but sit in the house staring at computers all weekend.
Bay needs groomed, and to start working a little. I noticed the other day that his bridle path, which hasn't been clipped all winter, is now laying over and almost grown out to the length of everything else. His 'chestnuts' on his legs are grown out an inch. He doesn't look like anyone cares for him at all :~\
JP and I just came in from playing. It's very hot here today. 90's, and it's only April:(....
Do you trim the chestnuts on his legs yourself? I've wondered about that. Harley's and Rocky's have always just peeled off on their own, but I've heard that some times they have to be trimmed.
