This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Did you tell your dad that everyone else who visited her has lived to tell about it :) I still chuckle when I think of that.
I have internet meeting 'references'! :~D
Are you 'for' or 'against' electrolytes? :~D
The old rule allowed you to put them in the feed in camp only. The change allows paste e-lytes to be carried with you during the ride and can be given at anytime during the ride.
I did not have a problem with the old rule. I don't like the new rules. I don't have a problem with giving them with paste, but not for a competition where the main points are lost or earn on condition.
Becky
LOL,, oh yeah. I thought it was pretty good criteria to go on:)
No, I didn't mention it to my dad. I don't think it would make a difference.
Becky
But I'm not going to fuss about it. I just am not going to carry them with me.
I know when I go my horse is going to be fine, he will be conditioned properly. From everything I've learned about e-lytes, a horse that is properly conditioned for what is being asked of him, is fed well, will not need e-lytes in this sport. Maybe for a longer endurance type ride they would be, but not for a CTR.
Becky
I see... I get your purist attitude. It's good.
I think electrolytes are a good idea for a horse that's working hard... Do you think it makes a huge difference in how they test out?
Yeah, I've had gatorade do that for me, but even for me the "conditioning" is the factor of why the gatorade helped. Mostly I'm not conditioned:)
Becky
Mostly I'm not either :~D LOL
I wonder if I should carry a tube as a boost on long rides for the ole Bay? Is it expensive?
I don't think so, I've never bought any in the paste form, but I know almost everyone there carries them.
How much does he sweat? Does he ever get foamy, or is the sweat clear?
If he really really sweats alot, loses salts and stuff, I guess it wouldn't hurt.
Becky
No he hardly ever really sweats ~that~ much, it's rarely all that hot, and we don't work ~that~ hard. The times that he does sweat, I worry about him. Might be good to carry as a 'just in case' in the emergency kit. I want to start carrying more first aid stuff now that I've got my new saddle bags.
Do you get it at feed and farm supplies, or from a vet?
*sigh* I am the only one in class right now. Class break ends in 5 minutes
I just googled it:)
Be sure you get the kind made for horses.
I bet your feed store carries some. Mine does.
On the google site I looked at, I saw a single dose tube for $6.99 or a 4lb tub, 82 doses, with syringe for $29.99,
That's just one brand, but gives you an idea.
Duchess might know more about them since they endurance ride.
Becky
I would rather be riding one of Hair's horses right now LOLOL!!!
When I used to be in class, we didn't have computers... or internet :~D
We should not have them, either. All it is is a bid distraction. No one is studying for the FINAL exam next week. They are all goofing off. I tell ya, I picked a great school to go to LOLOL!!!
We didn't even have computers in our rooms or at home! No one did! And this wasn't all that long ago. We typed papers on fancy typewriters that we thought were really cool.
