This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
My husband wouldn't watch one second of it.
LOL. With all the trouble I've had with horses for the last few years, Mack has been on a (pretend, sort of serious) campaign for me to just get rid of the horses, and we'll move to town:). But then the few times I've gotten close to agreeing with him he laughs and says you couldn't make it without your horses:)
But, he doesn't really like watching the RFD show I do, and in gerneral, doesn't like horses.

Good Lord, I think my husband and Mack are the same person.
LOL, I've been noticing, there are alot of couples around that have this situation going on in the house:) Seems like if the woman is a horse lover more often then not the husband, just tolerates it to keep peace:)
Becky
And then there's my friend Bob who is a husband with a wife that doesn't ride :~D
I just watched The Extreme Cowboy Race again and at the beginning of the show, they show which cowboys are in this race. One of them is the guy that works with Lance, Pete Oen. He's the one that came out and picked up Juma and I think did most of his training.
LOl, very seldom do you get 2 in one family:). I've just always been thankful tho, that Mack has never really minded how much I ride, or that I leave for weekends. His biggest gripe is that sometimes the horses causes me stress, and I get cranky:). But when things are smooth for me his is entirely supportive:)

I just watched the beginning of Lance going thru the course. Wow, he didn't to bad, but I have to say, I think this type of thing would do wonders for horses. Like the guy was explaining at the beginning, it gets the horse out of it's comfort zone, and makes for a more diverse horse. I like the concept. I can see why Kristy thought it was a barrel horse tho. It wasn't till they were half thru that they said it wasn't one of Lance's horses.
Becky
I'll count my lucky stars that my husband likes to ride with me. :~D
Helping clean stalls though, he only does to keep the peace :~D
What kind of stuff are they doing?
I think that's about the time Bay would say - "Count me out - I'm done" :~D
That's what the horse in the picture looked like he was saying:)
Actually the guy tuffy and I are talking about had trouble with getting his horse over the logs. Then loping the circles he broke to a trot a few times, switched leads a few times, and his stop was on his front end.
They never said what this horse was specialized trained in, (I'd suspect roping, he was fine with the rope swinging over his head and dragging the log), but I've always thought it was sad/funny/not good, that most horses now a days can do ONE thing well. IMO, that's not a good horse, no matter how many awards they have in that event.

I've done those long hanging strips on Tuffy during a spook proofing clinic, he barely gave them a second look.
I've been recording all of those shows but not watching them. I just watched the first one of this round and there was another barrel racer, a girl from Missouri (I think). Anyway, she was riding this absolutely gorgeous black stallion. I wasn't too impressed with his performance but he was sure 'nuff good lookin'!
I think Harley would do it, he just might need some time for that first step into them.
Becky
I think horses probably have a few roles in most lives, but most of ~us~ only do one thing.
It was funny the time we took our English-show horse-type Arabs to a little open gaming show and entered them in everything, barrels, poles, a flag race, all kinds of stuff... yanked em around and confused 'em mostly the way kids will, and the funny part was, we weren't that much slower than the kids that supposedly knew what they were doing. :~D
"but I've always thought it was sad/funny/not good, that most horses now a days can do ONE thing well. IMO, that's not a good horse, no matter how many awards they have in that event."
You are absolutely right.
On the first program of this round, there is a girl from Oregon on a 20 year old horse that she barrel races on, does western pleasure, rides english and I don't know what else. That horse sailed through that course with no hesitation. I bet she wins.
If they resemble tarps, Bay wouldn't like it. He might shoot through, but you'd be lucky to stay with him :~D He doesn't like plastic or flappy things... He thinks I'm going to kill him with something that comes out of a plastic bag one day.
George the pony is deathly afraid of plastic. It's like a phobia.
I just watched the second guy, the one after Lance. Wow, I was impressed. That was a 3 year old horse. The narrator is a bit of a dork:), but he said the guy riding this horse, said that the circles was the hardest part. I thought that interesting.
He might not have done it fast, but he did it alot prettier then Lance did.
