This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

And only $6000. and did you see...endurance horse. That's incredible. I've had numerous people at my competitons say Quarter horses aren't the best for that sport because they have too much muschle...HAHAHA!!!! Can you imagine showing up with something like this:)

Reality, personally, I really wouldn't want a horse like that. Hell, I think Harley is too big:). I like the one Ruthie posted earlier:)
Draft horses are fun to look at and neat to see them work, but I have no desire for anything like that.

I just think they're really magnificent.
We stopped and talked to these little tiny women on Clydesdales once on trail (at least they seemed like tiny women on those horses, maybe that's the appeal ;~) And as we sat there and talked and we admired the horses, one of them stretched out to take a pee and I thought we were gonna have to call it a river and name it. It just didn't stop! :~D
And she sure is leggy for a Belgian - but that may be her youth.

After my Lab gets her Seasoned HR title and her Excellent agility title, I'm going for a Candlewoods pup. (I keep forgetting to write Mary Howley, who owns Candlewoods, but I need to.) The best field trial dogs in the country -- over a 15 year period, she bred something like 9 or 10 national champions. My Lab's mother is a Candlewoods bitch, daughter of a national champion Chocolate. (Her dad is a show dog - a Canadian champion and the son of two American champions - but still just a show dog. I'm not getting any more show Labs - they've gotten too short and too fat, and most of them can't find a bird in a phone booth.)
Chocs can be a little hyper, but you have a good chance of getting a REALLY sweet dog! For all my girl's performance drive, she is as affectionate and gentle a dog as you will ever meet. And she has a good sense of humor.
No, you'd be having the same problem as AAM and spuring your saddle blanket. Those buggers aren't just tall, they're big around too!
You're right about show Lab's being too short and fat. They look like hogs with a dog head stuck on it. But the part about not being able to find a bird in a phone booth, now THAT was funny!
I won't ever turn up my nose at an older horse, because my mare is pushing 21 and she still runs like a little Swiss watch.
I like a TALL horse - but not a BIG horse - and I can barely crawl on 16 hands as it is.

I got into retrieving late, at the urging of a friend who was running her husband's hunting dog in agility. The first time my girl heard a shotgun and saw a duck go spinning down, she went NUTS! She could not wait to run out there and get her mouth on that bird. Given her mother's breeding, that's no surprise, but it still was wonderful and amazing to see a splendid little dog doing what she was born and bred for, with nothing but her instinct to guide her.
. . . now, of course, when you get to the detail work like multiple retrieves, swim-bys, and blinds, well, they can't do THAT by instinct. But she's working on it.
