The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Ellie has 2 swirls, but she's not spooky at all. I posted a picture of them a while back. I knew it was Linda Tellington-Jones that said all that, but I didn't have the exact text of it. I'll see if I can find the pic and post it again...

Yeah, that's what he was saying, something about breakover, moving it back...something:)

Well, we'd like to see a two-swirl horse anyway, since we're only finding one on all of ours!

I've heard this debate for years too. I had someone, I can't remember who, say that the type of hoofs like Bay has, mixed are the best. Black can get too hard and break/crack easy, white is too soft and doesn't hold shoes well, but mixed is more balanced:)

One of those theories that can't be "proved", IMO.

Well, if they really are different, it would seem he'd be walkin' all slanted all the time ;~D

I'd think the 'hardness' could be proved one way or the other...

She wears bell boots in front and full splint boots on all four, and there aren't any wear marks on any of them. She steps pretty clean.

It may just be that foot . . . regardless of its color. She does tend to throw a superficial crack in one of her front feet- the farrier had to put a staple in it once but I started her on Source as well as her glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM and that seems to have cleared that up.

You know, T-J has some interesting ideas, but sometimes I feel like she has gone right over the edge into LaLa land...

LOL!! That's what I thought too.

Well Charlie is here, (my in house expert:), says white feet dry out faster and break off easier:). I would have thought the other way around.

Just a general question here. (My education continues....)
Is this considered ~too~ chubby or does she look OK?

If you'll look at that shoe, the crease where the nails go is higher, and the rest of the shoe is beveled away from it, all the way around. You put that crease back under the toe where the break over should be and it gives you a rocker so that their foot breaks over easier in any direction, with much less strain on the ligaments up the back of the leg and in the foot.

She's more 'soft' than fat. If she got in shape, she'd probaby have more muscle and less jiggle in her quarters, but her weight's not bad, IMHO. Except for the chewing, she sounds like a great horse to have.

That said, for a mustang, she's bulky and has pretty good substance. I'd have thought she was QH.

Oh - they needed to put a person in the pic for scale... she's really little - 13.2 hh - only four or so inches taller than my pony.

She looks very "healthy". You can tell that she's not one to miss too many meals. She'd be fine for light riding but would probably find long or hot rides to be a bit much. My rule of thumb is that you shouldn't be able to "see" the ribs, but you should be able to feel them by running your hand lightly down their side. In other words, you shouldn't have to dig to find them.

I figured she was just a bit ~unexercised~. *grin*

She's pretty though.

And with her chewing habit, she doesn't miss any snacks either! LOL!

Too small for a rider my size then, but a good size for Rebecca?

What size is considered too short for an adult rider?

She looks more out of shape than fat, but I think she is carrying a little too much weight (of course, my horse is a tall, skinny T'bred). With that dip in her back, you want to keep her on the slim side anyway - some of that dip will disappear if you put her in regular work, because her back should muscle up a little.

Somebody little like you would probably be OK on her. For a small horse, her proportions are good to make her strong. She has a very short back, which helps. My pony is rather long backed, which makes her not as strong for carrying weight.

Pony's 12.2. Cyn's standing in a hole downhill fromt he pony so it's deceptive but that mare would be somewhere between Pony and Cyn, who is probably 14.3-15.

What size is considered too short for an adult rider?

Depends on the size and shape of the adult rider. While my short legs (especially in the lower leg) mean that I never did compete in equitation (looks odd), it also means that I can still get away with riding ponies (at 5'6") and not look too weird. My daughter is a skinny 5'8" 17 year old, but she has long legs like her daddy, so she quit riding ponies at 12 because she looked so darned peculiar . . . you could see her opposite ankle under the pony! My son at 5'3 or so was continuing to ride ponies, then he had a sudden growth spurt and is now a well proportioned 5'10" (7 inches in one year!) so our trainer took him off the squirrely App pony he's been riding for several years and put him on a big Trakehner mare and he looks great.

You can see my problem with the legs here:

I ride shorter in the field, and my leg has slipped back a little - but you can see that I have to be careful or I'm just spurring my saddle pad . . .
