This morning, on FNC, they ran a story about a "granny" in NY who had sucessfully fought off a mugger. She immigrared here from Romania after the WWII and said she learned to protect her against the Nazis when she was a child. Anyhow, she speaks English but with a very pronounced accent. Speaking English used to be not just a requirement for persons seeking to become citizens but it was a source of pride. I understand that for some people English is difficult and I don't have a problem with the ones who sincerely try. Heaven knows I've needed plenty of help in other countries myself.
If or when we ever get a comprehensive immigration bill passed, we need to check it very carefully. Some Congresscritter is liable to try and sneak in a provision that requires small business owners, like that bar owner, to employ a bilingual staff.
