2006 TO BE A MAKE OR BREAK YEAR FOR HOLLYWOOD

This is a make-or-break year for Hollywood.

“One down year is an anomaly, but two could be a trend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office-tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co. “This year is really a turning point.”

Keenly aware of the 7% drop in movie attendance in 2005, studio executives are pinning their hopes on a better slate of films to draw consumers back to the multiplex. But industry watchers say the business has more far-reaching problems that a few good films can’t necessarily fix as in-control consumers turn to entertainment alternatives like Netflix, the Internet and on-demand programming.

Box office down With box office down and costs up -- the average Hollywood film now costs about $65 million to produce and another $35 million for prints and advertising—this could well be a watershed year as executives are forced to rethink some of the traditional tenets of the business. Among them: cinemas getting first crack at releases; top acting talent getting sweetheart deals; and rethinking the hallowed concept of tent-pole movies.

Moreover, pundits predict that studio marketing dollars will continue to migrate away from TV and toward the Internet, grassroots events and guerrilla marketing.

Have you seen "Saw"? We saw Saw a few weeks ago, and it was a lot better than I would have thought. Really kept your interest.

I can't stand hack and slash, but I hate the wierd, supernatural ones worse, especially if they involve kids. I guess I'm a big chicken.

I like action/adventure, comedy and romance. I especially like movies that do it all -- like The Mummy or The Mask of Zorro.

When my daughter gets a bit older, I hope to have a buddy for chick flicks. The boys outnumber us 4:2, so we don't get a lot of say.

I recommend "Steel Magnolias" as a first class tearjerker supreme. Funny as hell and you'll bawl your eyes out. Though a man I am a big cry baby.

X3. Pirates of the Csrribean 2. Ultraviolet. Ghost Rider.

There will be more I want to see in the theater than there was last year by exactly one movie.

Maybe after Hollywood collapses we can move the US movie making complex to Austin, TX.

It's a bit closer to the middle than Hollywood ever was. It's also surrounded by a big ol' Red State.

Don't mean to get on my soapbox but movies like Saw hack me off when they put the video covers in the stores. Can you imagine the fear of a child when they walk by and see this next to "Sammy the Cute Cat" in the New Relase section?

(actually, posting the video cover may get me banned so I better not)
