Packers will talk to Chargers' Phillips Posted: Wednesday January 4, 2006 12:37PM; Updated: Wednesday January 4, 2006 12:37PM
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will interview for the Green Bay Packers' vacant head coaching job Monday, an NFL source told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Phillips, who just concluded his second year as an assistant to Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, was the Buffalo Bills' head coach from 1998-2000.
Phillips is one of several candidates expected to be interviewed by Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who fired coach Mike Sherman on Monday.
Thompson said during his news conference Monday he will speak to current Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates about the job, but also appears to be casting a wide net outside the organization.
The Dallas Morning News reported that the Packers and New Orleans Saints had been granted permission to interview Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton.
Former Chicago Bears linebacker Mike Singletary, another named tossed around in the Packers' rumor mill, said Tuesday that he had not been contacted by the Packers but has spoken to the Detroit Lions.
Gary O'Hagan, agent for former Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci, said the Packers have not contacted Mariucci as of Tuesday evening. Mariucci was the Packers' quarterbacks coach under Mike Holmgren.

Mistake, he is a great DC, but I do not think he is head coach material.
Red Miller not available?
I wonder if most organizations already have an idea of who they are going to hire before they fire a coach that has done a good but not great job.
Sherman may not be the best coach in the world, but he might be better than what else is truly available to you.
I think a lot of colleges make that mistake.
Agreed. I'm surprised the Packers are even considering him.
The "Green crush" just doesn't have a ring to it.
In some cases probably.
As a Bears fan, I hope they hire him..
Just waiting to find out which coaching retread the Lions are going to get stuck with.
The Bears play in a great division from their perspective.
I think most coaches would rather work for Al Davis at this point.
Can't say I'd blame them.
Take Maurice Carthon....please
Packers should look toward Russ Grimm
Aww man Singletary was the man! Although Ron Rivera has done a pretty good coaching job as well. Da Bears!
An incredibly intelligent football player during his day.
Don't forget.....every one of these teams looking for a head coach must interview a minority candidate before making a decision. If not, they will be fined at least $200K just like Matt Millan and the New Fallujah Lions were for hiring Mariucci.
Is that policy still in effect? I thought they'd backed off on that.
