I went to see this movie yesterday. It was just about sold out, but it was a small theater in a multiplex. I was somewhat disappointed with the film. Some fantastic cinematography, a smashing performance by Heath Ledger, but believe it or not, rather a cliched, schlocky love story, plus an uninspired screenplay, which was co-written by Larry McMurtry. Really, the best thing about it is Heath Ledger, who will certainly be nominated for an Oscar, and I guess it's between him and Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Capote. I think I'd go with Ledger.

I think some of the great reviews have as much to do with the perceived "bravery" of making a movie like this, which isn't fair to the public. It should be judged as a film - not a gay film - or a groundbreaking film. It is being touted as the first gay cowboy film, but in fact Midnight Cowboy could be seen as that, and Midnight Cowboy was a stronger film. I think it's a good film, not a great film. Not at the Best Picture Oscar level if you ask me, but worth seeing.

I thought Joaquin was the Oscar frontrunner.

Was Michelle Williams as good as everyone says?
