The Hobbit Hole XXVI - Home is behind, the world ahead
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 12/11/2005 8:37:40 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Home is behind, the world ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We had fun! Hope they did too...

Wish we had gotten a pic of the emus, though.

Last time I went to the county fair back home, there were some emus there. I'd never seen them in person before - hadn't realized how big they are!

They weren't exactly friendly.

You bet, the booshway has a similar beard though a lot more salt; Voyaguer would also be great, given your Great Lakes background. Colorful characters they were, hmm, good match imho.

Oh, Auloutee... :-)

Yeah, they're pretty big, just a little smaller than ostriches.

The llama we saw was big... his head must have been 7 feet off the ground! Curious creature, too... he was watching us watch him, and we were on the other side of the highway.

People raise emus for meat, right? Like ostriches?

I've never seen 'em on a farm or anything. Wonder if that's more common in other countries. I've seen deer farms, which seems odd...but I can see that before large birds. Heh...

There's an Emu farm next door to our friend Bob's.

Meat, leather, eggses. Eggses for really big omelets.

Dang...yeah, it'd be interesting cooking with those! I've had duck eggs, which are large relative to chicken eggs, but nothing like emu eggs, I imagine! How big are they?

Heh...has Gidget ever seen an emu? I'm just thinkin' our retrievers wouldn't have known WHAT to think of 'em...

I looked it up... emus are raised for meat, leather, and an oil which is used for cosmetic and pharmaceutical purposes.

There was an emu-raising fad in the 80's, lots of ranches started raising them as a sort of money-making scheme. Market was hot for a while, then collapsed (of course...) but lots of places still have them down here.

Well... I drove one.

Schwweeeet. :-)

When I talked to Dad he asked me how I liked it and I said "Well... it matters less and less how much ~you~ like it anymore..."

:-)

The remarkable thing about emu eggs is the color.

People carve them...

Oil from feathers or something? Guess I could look it up myself.

Emu oil. That just doesn't sound like something that one would wanna use for cosmetics or anything. Ya learn something every day.
