The difference is that the cable company is almost always a locally-enforced government monopoly. The only competition is satellite, which has its own problems depending on where you live and has to inherit the dominant pricing structure.

It is interesting to me that the satellite companies don't try a la carte. Or at least some version with a minimum or a flat surcharge.

In my case, a la carte would be a godsend because I'm a single guy.

Sorry to break this to you, but you are buying a package of channels.

Because that's the only way the cable company sells them!

Maybe I only like cherry Life Savers, but if I buy a roll of 5 Flavors and throw away the rest, I'm still buying all 5 flavors.

And you'll notice that Life Savers come in 5 Flavors, but they also come in all cherry or all lemon or all lime. Because CONSUMERS told Life Savers that they prefer to buy Life Savers that are all one particular flavor ... the flavor they LIKE!

Life Savers could have adopted YOUR award-winning attitude toward marketing and offered squash-flavored candy, then told their consumers to stuff it if they didn't like it. In which case they would be "The Company Formerly Known as Life Savers."

Life Savers does provide you the option of getting all cherry, though. They've realized the benefit of providing that to their consumers.

I'll bite, why? HBO is one of the few channels I'd keep if I could pick.

You reminded me. I'd have to keep Discovery so I can continue watching American Chopper.

They are way overdoing it on cultural sensitivity and political correctness demagoguery with their HBO produced shows and movies.

There also seems to be a lot of Republican bashing and innuendos used towards the unsuspecting viewer as if their opinion was of the norm.
