Garth "created" Chris Gaines for a movie that was never finished. It wasn't an alter-ego by any means. He was to release the record and a movie was to be released with Chris Gaines as the main character.
Also, to silent_johnny, Garth retired in 2001 or 2002.

Are you sure? I saw a CMT special on him and they said it was his pet project that failed. I think maybe he wrote the movie

It wasn't an alter-ego by any means. He was to release the record and a movie was to be released with Chris Gaines as the main character. It may not have been an alter-ego, but I think it was an ego trip. He hosted SNL during this--he was the host and "Gaines" was the musical guest.
