Africa, I think. There are forms there considerably more primitive than the Greek lyre. But then again, it could have been invented multiple times.
Did you know that the banjo is African in origin? Brought to America by slaves, where it took its final form.

36 foot Catalina MK 2.
holy cow!!!! i've had some experience in a 36 footer, but she was a bugeye ketch, one of two at that time on the
chesapeake, and the only wooden one. the other boats were a comet class (16 foot), a 30 ft bristol sloop (wonderful boat, unfortunatly, not mine) and a little generic 18 footer - just big enough to act like a sailboat, small enough for me to more or less stay out of trouble in.

Thanks. I won't talk about it much, though. It seems to ruin the mood.

I vaguely knew that - I haven't given much thought to the banjo!!

"(I'm packing some of each into Pringles cans to send in my son's Christmas package.)" Suggestion: Lay the cans down in the box so the cookies travel on edge ... I know. Who wants a nervous cookie? Right?
I just figured they'd arrive with less breakage.

The way the box is packed, "on edge" is the only way they will fit. I've even included a tub of vanilla frosting for the sugar cookies, complete with confetti sprinkles!
I'm done making cookies now and with luck, I can mail off the package on Tuesday. (I don't think I want to do a Monday at a PO...or maybe I'll have them pick it up...)

"... to be nice to people until I make ten million dollars; then people will be nice to me." *Sigh* Inflation.
The $30,000 Bequest -- Mark Twain
Saladin Foster was book-keeper in the principal store, and the only
high-salaried man of his profession in Lakeside. He was thirty-five
years old, now; he had served that store for fourteen years;
he had begun in his marriage-week at four hundred dollars a year,
and had climbed steadily up, a hundred dollars a year, for four years;
from that time forth his wage had remained eight hundred--a handsome
figure indeed, and everybody conceded that he was worth it.
