We place turf on an open fire, like with any other domestic fuel.

Turf on it's own doesn't produce great heat - so coal and timber is also used, the turf and other fuel together then produce a long lasting and warm fire.

I think you have peatlands in Canada, any comercial and/or domestic use made of them?

Only for peat moss used in gardening.

A lot of our bogs are 'protected'.

Don't you lose a lot of heat with an open fire? Do you mean a fireplace with a chimney? Most of the heat goes out the chimney.

We use wood in two air tight wood stoves to heat our house, but most people use natural gas, oil, or propane.
