I might have an opinion or opinions about being a quick-study for languages if I had more information.

1. Would I be studying the language(s) or would I be the subject of the study?

2. Which languages, if we know of them at this time.

3. What function does the "quick-study" serve aboard SG-1?

4. What is SG-1?

5. By when do you need an answer?

SG-1 is the Stargate exploration team.

Many of the worlds they visit have languages which have drifted from their Earth origins. Daniel Jackson is the linguist who helps them communicate.

Your brother wants to study Elvish. I expanded the discussion to languages in general, and the Star Trek problem: If we meet another species, how will we talk to them?

5. Actually, I don't need an answer by any time certain. It is extremely unlikely we will meet intelligent aliens by travelling only to Mars. I was just making conversation.
