*Vanity* Need Help with Toddler that won't wear non-Summer clothes
Terrible Two Parent | self

Posted on 10/26/2005 11:52:43 AM PDT by GipperCT

OK, FreepPeeps! Need emergency help with 26 mo. old boy who does not want to wear any heavy shirts, pants or jackets.

I know there are some sympathetic parents out there, pleez help a fellow freep parent on suggestions.

It's not that he just doesn't like it, it's the stubbornness that goes along. I know, the nanny jokes will ensure, but that's ok. He makes himself sick crying and they eyes and nose run all over the place like his jacket or pants are holy water to a vampire ;-) when we try to get him used to these things for a while. He'll go on for 20 minutes like that shaking and crying.

Anyway, any assistance is appreciated.

Here's a real suggestion: Can you get him a coat and hat just like yours? Two-year-olds are very imitative, and the one they like best to imitate is Dad.

Unless he is bleeding or has an obvious fracture, ALWAYS IGNORE CRYING. Totally. Do not ask him to stop, do not hug him, do not yell at him, do not punish him. Ignore it.

I have three children, the youngest is two. I am old hat at this.

At two years old, they do not have enough sense to come in out of the rain, but do understand that they are developing control over their environment. If your son thinks he will get attention by throwing a fit, and I mean any kind of attention, good or bad, he will continue to do it.

Put the warm things on, and ignore him.

It is your world, and he is just living in it. Do not allow him to make you upset or feel guilty.

Put warm clothing on him. If he pitches a fit,IGNORE him!

Don't allow him to do anything he would enjoy.

Since spanking him and explaining why he needs to wear warm clothing hasn't worked, you must face the fact that he is having a case of the TERRIBLE TWOS ( which thankfully, my kiddo never went through, but I've seen other children go through this )and NOT allow him to manipulate you.

Tell him that you are the parent and he has NO say in this. If he won't wear the clothes he has to, he must stay in bed, or his room, or where you decide, WITHOUT the toys he likes or anything else he may want to do.

I'll quote from the book:

"Once he learns that the reward of a tantrum is a swift, forceful spanking, he will NEVER throw another fit".

Interesting idea....

Hopefully he doesn't have to wear the same everything in order to wear them....

Thanks, but again, he pulls everything off. I'd have to go the duct tape route and I don't need child svcs paying a visit.

Yes, sounds like:

Plan A: Leave in cold a while, see if he breaks
Plan B: See if the fanny whack works when the No,No,No arises....

I highly recommend Duct Tape. It's thin, like summer clothing, while wind and water resistant.

That is funny. Glad my kids haven't deserved that yet, but what a great tool.

I highly highly recommend the book. It only costs $5.00 I believe.
