What's up with my pony? Why is she peeing this much?
Both mares got fresh bedding last night. It was clean and dry. We have had to completely re-bed the pony every day this week bacause of this:
This is Cyn's stall at breakfast.
She was not like this last winter. There'd be a wet spot in the morning, not a whole wet ~stall~. Whether this is the result or the cause of her obsessively licking the salt lick I'm not sure, but one is probably related to the other.
I'm gonna be doing some googling to see if I can find anything, and perhaps end up calling the vet. Any ideas?
Possibly interesting details, she's a Hackney pony, seven or so years old, never bred, otherwise healthy and vigorous.
Take away her salt block completely and see if that doesn't solve the problem. Once her system has had a chance to stabilize, you can give her an appropriate amount of salt sprinkled on her feed.
And find her another stall vice!
(there are tons of causes for polyuria (excessive urination). Try this first because you know she's been after the salt block and it may be out of boredom.)
That's exactly what Rocky does. If he has a salt block and is locked in his pen, he just stands and licks and licks, which causes excessive drinking, which causese excessive peeing.
If I don't keep him locked up he doesn't do it. I know Pony isn't locked up, but I'd think it was from licking the salt block. But why is she doing that? Maybe and mineral/electrolyte imbalance??? Maybe try putting that loose mineral powder in her feed. It's good stuff. By Purina, 12-12-12. And get rid of the salt block. I was told give 2oz a day to each horse when I used it. With Rusty gone, I'm back to blocks for now. I've been watching to see if Rocky got obsessive about licking too.
That's what I'd try first.

Drinking a lot more - why? Maybe just the extra salt but maybe some kind of infection. I can't remember what but maybe you'll find something when you search. If it keeps up, yes at least call the vet.
