The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've tried to convince my mom that fresh air and exercise is what she needs to feel better, but she's not buying.

~sigh~

I'm glad she's ok. So far, I've been lucky with mine. No biters. Meeting my elbow might be a factor though. I did the same thing as your daughter once. I petted a stalled horse that didn't know me and she almost got me .

Yup. A sweet face can hide a sour disposition.

Tell me about it. She had her head down and watching me. Her ears were relaxed. She suckered me in big time. All I got just a slight bruise and a lot of slobber but she was "after me". Her owner said I should have let her have it because she does this but I didn't feel comfortable bitting someone elses horse back.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to discipline a horse that wasn't mine either.

I'd always question whether it was my fault or the horse's due to my lack of experience.

To: RMDupree

Well she couldn't have bit me if I had not stuck my hand in her chomping zone (my fault) but she has a history.

If she's bitten before, then it isn't your fault.

Especially since you didn't know about the history until ~after~ she bit you!

Great pictures Ruthie:) Looks like a nice place and the horses look better cared for.

LOL, about the biting horses. We had a brood mare that we brought up here one time after she foaled. The foal seemed small and a tad bit on the weak side, so we brought her here to keep an eye on her and get her out of the pasture with other horses. I wasn't thinking about what the mare and foal had been thru being loaded up and hauled here and then locked in a stall. She was stressed. Anyway right after we got them here I went in the stall to watch the foal nurse to make sure she was getting something. I was standing bent over with my butt towards the mare's head watching the foal. I wasn't touching either one but the mare reached around and bit me at the side of my back, about kidney level really really hard. Mack was in the yard when I came flying out of that stall yelling. He said I sounded like Jerry Clower when he does that AAHHHH sound:). It didn't break the skin but I had a perfect mark on my back for a year shaped just like that mares entire set of front teeth, top and bottom. I learned a lesson too about turning your back on a horse:)

I've been moving panels again today. I've decided that I'm not going to use the arena enough to warrent the upkeep of it, so I'm taking those panels to put up for my front perimeter fence, that will save having to buy some more. It will also open up Harley's side to be alot bigger. I think it will all look better when I'm done and work really well. I'll get pictures when I'm done, It will be a few days.

We have had beautiful weather here. Sorry it's raining on you guys.

Hair, glad that nothing seems to be wrong with Pony other then behavior. Taking the blocks away for a time might do the trick.

That's quite a remodel, you've got a lot of panels in that arena! That'd be kinda fun, in theory, arranging those panels like a big version of the little model farm set I had when I was a kid. I say in theory, because they're kinda big and heavy to carry around and the fun of it might wear off. I look forward to the pictures!

About turning your back on a horse, I got a hoof in the shoulder once from my stallion. He just barely grazed me with his front hoof or it could have been bad. I think he was tryin' to mount me. I hadn't had him very long then, and I never had another problem like that with him, but I learned, no matter how good they are, to never get complacent around a stallion.

But I ain't been bit. Yet.

Spend 15 minutes with a baby. I've never been really bit or kicked by an adult horse, but I have been kicked and bit by babies. All of them ;~D.

Joshua and Cody got into a scuffle yesterday. Cody ended up with a bite mark on his arm. I asked Joshua if he did it and he said yes. I told him I wasn't going to spank him since he didn't lie but he was going to have to be quarantined on the red chair because he bit someone. He was bawling and squalling. After a few minutes I told him he could go back into the general public but if he bit someone again I was going to put a collar on him and put him on a chain outside until his mom came home:') They all thought that was funny and of course had to run around like a bunch of dogs barking.

Hey, do any of yall know what paw paw patches are? My grandmother used to sing a song to me and I guess a memory triggered and I started singing it to Sarah and I have no idea what it means. It goes

Where o where is sweet little (name)?

Where o where is sweet little Sarah?

Where o where is sweet little Sarah

Way down yonder in the paw paw patch
