This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yes, is there a foal update this morning?
Loading pictures now. Sometime thru the night the sleet changed to snow. But it is not a pretty snow. Just hard tiny flakes that don't stick to trees. It's just miserable, cold, 10 degrees, very windy and ugly out.

~Shivers~...
Looks cold... it's cold here too, but looks warmer because there's no white stuff.
I'm feeling sorry for the birds. My bird bath is frozen solid and filled to the top so pouring hot water on it is not helping, and you can tell the poor things want a drink. I guess I'm going to have to find something else to put water in that I can bring in to thaw out occasionally thru the day.
I had to put all new feed out for them as everything I put out yesterday is under ice.
Have I mentioned I hate winter....!!!!!!!!!! I really do, ~scowling, bad mood this morning~.
Becky
You too? ;~D
Hair, Try this, if you leave it on, ever so slightly overnight it wont freeze. Just leave it at a trickle. I know it sounds wasteful but its not (it's better than leaving them with a frozen bucket). Leave the water trough empty or low after their PM feeding and leave the nozzle on just a bit overnight. The fresh running water makes them more likely to drink, the water in the bucket and in the hose wont freeze and no dangerous possibility of no H20 in the am.
Good tip :~D - the old nozzle I had leaked, and it worked really well for that. :~D This new one doesn't leak, and I haven't figured out a way yet to make it just barely drip ;~D
Wasting water isn't really an issue up in WA - we're on a well, and water, we gots lots of :~D
Hair, a dripping nozzle in winter is a girl's best friend. ;) As if going out at dawn in the freezing, $%#*ing cold to haul hay and mix feed isnt enough, breaking ice and trying to unfreeze your hose is just beyond the pale. The horror.........
......;)
The dogs enjoy this weather. They get to come in and lull around in comfortable chairs:)
Becky
Well, it's buckets from the house this morning...
And I'm about to start water boiling for a hot mash... they love that when it's cold :~D
I'll put some hot water out in a pan for ours too, when it gets light. :~D
The dog looks no worse for wear :~D
Do you just use your regular feed in the mash, or is it something different?
Becky
Just regular feed... which right now is about 1/2 sweet cob and 1/2 Senior pellets. The pellets turn to mush, the corn oats and barley swells up :~D
I'll see if I can get a picture of it steaming, and the horses smiling and lippin' at it :~D
Must be my mood, but that makes me so mad at my horses. I've tried everything with them, and they just won't eat it. Logic tells me "well then, then don't need it" , but it would make ME feel better it they would eat it:). You'd think they could do that for me after all I do for them:) I'd be happy to make it for them, but I hate wasteing all that feed when they don't eat it.
Becky
I think you have weird horses that don't know a good thing when they see it :~\
Here's their hot mash... poured boiling water in it and let it sit just a minute... it cools fast. Cyn's (left) is 1/2 senior half cob, pony's in the middle is all cob, and Bay's on the right is mostly senior just a little cob.
Bay lips...
Cyn slurpy lips ;~D
ecurbh guarding Cyn's.... Bay was reaching over and stealing hers...
Pouring hot water buckets - ugh...
Having their hay outside... because while cold, it's really bright and sunny out.
Walking the back forty fenceline... The back forty took the wind just fine... no major branches or trees on the fence.
Sunrise :~D
Now I understand :) Boy, I'm sorry, frozen hoses are impossible to deal with although the horses probably appreciate the warm water you carry out.
Well, it'd be best if we emptied them, but it seems such a hassle. Nothing I hate more than a frozen hose though... USELESS!
No foal yet and I have to work today so if she does foal I won't be there. Bob will be home all day and a friend is going to spend the day there also.
Have fun at the show.
