Yeah, and you can only give him bute for so long before it eats his stomach up, so you're kinda caught between a rock and a hard place. What kinda shoes have you got him on?
He's in an elevated rail shoe with pour in pads.
tuffy's last injections were Legend (hyaluronic acid) but it didn't have much of an effect. He's going to inject steroids this time, which is risky for Tuffy, but we are at the end of the line and have to try anything.
Those are good. I saw some of them applied this past weekend at the shoeing clinic. The cool thing about these Natural Balance rail shoes is that they were all modifiable, after they were put on. The rail pieces and frog supports were removable and came in 3 different heights, so they put the ones on first that they thought would help the most, then walked the horse and observed if he was better or worse, then changed out things on different feet until they got him going with with very little discernible limp. It was pretty cool!
They don't do it under anesthesia, they twitch the horse so he doesn't move. (I've had other horses injected in the coffin joint, which is where the steroids go). Tuffy has foundered, so that makes steroids risky. He can't have them orally or muscle injections at all, which is going to make his allergies nearly impossible to manage this summer.
This rail shoe is pretty interesting, I'd never seen them before, but so far nothing is working to keep Tuffy pain free, except bute.

My fingers are absolutely frozen. It's 27 out, but with 20 mph winds, it's really cold with wind chill. I just had to go out and close the back forty so the horses can't get out there... it's windy enough that we might get limbs or deadfall on the fence. The back forty is closed off with electric handle gates that are tight in warm weather, but really hard to stretch when cold.
A local is probably a good idea, Tuffy's feet were blocked when he got the Legend injections so he didn't need the twitch. The injections only take a second, probaby the same amount of time as a local, that may be why none of the vets I've used have done a local beforehand. What seems to take the longest is the scrubbing. The injections site has to be darn near sterile before they'll do it and they take forever cleaning it.

It's the steroids for his allergies that got him into this predicament in the first place, so I can understand why you're concerned about more shots. It's a shame that you had to choose between him having allergies so bad that he scratched his skin off and giving him steroid shots which helped the itch but messed up his feet. You'd think they could come up with something better to keep the little buggers at bay.
I have a last ditch resort for his allergies, sometimes the school vet clinics can come up with a serum, if they can figure out what-all the animals are allergic to. It's rarely just one thing causing the problems. I'm going to have to figure out a way to get him down to Texas A&M this spring and see if they can figure something out.
That's gotta be expensive...
I'm sure the cost will be astronomical but if it works, it'll be well worth it.

I just got back from the doctors with Jenny. I think it's getting close:) She is dialated to one, she's 90% thinned??? and the baby is in the high 6 lb range. Her due date is Mar. 18, but the doctor said she would be surprised if she went that long.
