This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

When you're in it, it feels like there's too much air time between strides, and it's a lot more vertical than it looks. It's actually not a particularly easy trot to sit to.

I wish you could see SL and tell me why she trots so rough. Nobody but me likes to ride her.

Well, there's jarring rough, and springy bouncy... None but Frog's gaited horses are the only ones that are ~really~ smooth at speed. ;~D
Cyn's trot is smoother than Bay's... But Bay's is less jarring than some others I've been on...
That black mare that I ride, Tammy, her trot is something awful. Not comfortable at all to sit to.
We are talking about paint can in the mixer bouncy:') I have found a spot that's comfortable where I can post with her by exaggerating sittng back. I feel like I'm leaning back but I'm not. If you don't find it, no one can tell watching but you come off feeling like everything inside of you shaken.
Hey everyone, haven''t posted in awhile. And I have a question.
I have a Fabtron synthetic saddle/cordura.....how do I clean it? Can I hose it off? Use soap? Kind of a dumb question but don't know who else to ask.
I didn't mean to imply that she said forging was a "desirable" trait, just that correcting it isn't necessary, hitting shoe to shoe, which is what he does doesn't hurt him in anyway, but correcting it as we did with him, can cause worse problems. No I will not put overstrike boots on him. I can't. They are illegal at rides. He has never scraped his heels and he has only pulled a shoe off one time. I believe there are ways to keep that from happening if he starts doing it other then cutting his toes shorter changing the break over.
His striking himself in the back has nothing to do with the forging but was caused by being trimmed uneven. Even Chris admitted that.

Huh. I just wipe mine down. I would be concerned that I couldn't get the soap out. I have hosed my blanket down though.
Yeah - I understood that distinction. Will you be able to continue with the same shoer or might there be a conflict in opinion?
OK - I remember now about the bad trim causing the striking in the back... I couldn't remember what brought that on.
You can use a little soap and water on the fabric parts... use a saddle soap and moisturizer on the leather parts.
Avoid getting water on the leather part, and especially the suede part.
Upright shoulder and short upright pasterns will do that... A horse's shock absorbers are in the pasterns. Those little choppy trots are actually easier to learn to post on in my experience than long swinging trots like Bay. You can use the bouncing motion to your advantage. Posting on Bay is awkward because it's a slow rhythm.

Can you show me what you mean by upright though. Stepping stiffly?
Pasterns - The pastern should be at a 45-degree angle (example A; example B shows a too-sloping pastern; example C shows a too-upright pastern). Its length should be proportionate; too long a pastern could indicate weakness and tendon strain, while if too short it may absorb too much concussion, thus stressing the bone structure.
She just needed to be pushed a little and she was smooth enough to sit her trot for miles. We actually did an 8 mile competitive ride at an extended trot the whole way. Well except for her walking across the bridge and jumping the tire and water obstacles :)
